Breathing problem while using Cpap

Post by Swaraj Kumar Ghosh » Tue Jun 07, 2022 8:14 am

Hi. I'm a new user of Cpap. But while using it I'm feeling suffocating. Seems like I can't breathe or trying hard to exhale and inhale. Is it normal?

Welcome to the forum! After you've read the post Pugsy linked, please let us know at least this much:

Brand and model of your machine,
Brand and model of your mask,
Pressure settings on your machine (minimum, maximum, and if you're using one of these, exhale pressure relief, flex, or pressure support).

If you know your AHI, please give us that information too, ideally with a breakdown into types of events (obstructive apnea, central apnea, hypopnea).

If your machine is compatible with the Oscar software, it would be an excellent idea to get going with that, but we might be able to offer you some help without being able to review Oscar charts.
Oscar software is available at https://www.sleepfiles.com/OSCAR/

It's auto. So it starts basically from 4.0 . Sometimes 3.7 to 10-12.

Model no - BMC G2SA20
Settings from the day of buying:
P95 - 11.5 cmH20
Period - 1 month
Compliance - 6h
P mean - 8.0 CM H20
Tube - 22 mm
Reslex - 3

My Report- from 8/6/22 to 6/6/22 respectively:
Mean pressure = 8.0/8.5/6.0
AI = 2.2/3.6/19.6
HI= 1.6/2.6/5.2
High leak time = 00:06/00:14/00:28

Doctors told me nothing about the settings. I'm a new user. Sometimes I feel like suffocating. Seems like I can't exhale or inhale. Is it normal? Or I need to change anything in the machine? Please help!!!

Find out from your MD or ? what the minimum and maximum pressure settings (not all the other stuff) are - they're key to how you feel. It's too common that MDs prescribe a default low min. setting of 4 and don't realize most cannot inhale well at that number (max setting can usually be left much higher, e.g. 20) and so need to raise it by a couple of cms, but you can't assume it's the case for you without knowing what the min. setting is and should be told as it's your therapy. If this is the problem for you (very low min. setting) we can help you tweak it, but not without knowing first what it is.

Unfortunately your particular model/brand machine isn't compatible with OSCAR for us to be able to look at detailed reports to see what might be going on.
So all we have to go on are the numbers you are reporting.

My first guess to explain some difficulties breathing would be that starting minimum pressure of 4 cm.
It is often a primary complaint from people that they simply can't breathe comfortably at that pressure. They can't seem to move enough air to be comfortable.

ResLex at 3 is your brand's form of exhale relief but you can't/won't really feel its benefits at your 4 cm starting point.
You would need around 7 cm starting point to get the full benefit.
Your mean average pressure is around 8 cm...anyway.

I would suggest increasing the minimum to 7 cm (up from the 4 cm) and see if that is more comfortable for you and that is the only change I would suggest making at this time.

It starts from 3.4 .. I've just switched off the option called Ramp. Feel like not getting enough air. So without ramp it basically starts from 4.0 till 12/14 sometimes or more than that. But sometimes the minimum level drops into 2.7 but just for a fraction of sec. Then again 4.0. Kindly help me. No one is there to tell me what's the max & minimum level...

Please read what I said above.

The maximum pressure setting is pretty much a moot setting. The machine isn't going anywhere near that setting as it is.

The minimum pressure setting is the one that does the bulk of the work holding the airway open and preventing apnea events. That is also the one that people can have a problem with when it is too low of a setting.
Your minor dips below 4 cm....that's just you getting a little bit of exhale relief kicking in but it's not really enough to matter much.

It is quite common for people to complain of not being able to breathe easily and comfortably at the setting of 4 cm minimum starting point while awake.

Change the minimum to 7 cm....see how it feels and report back. No other changes.

Where are you located?
