Nasal mask vs. full face mask issues
Nasal mask vs. full face mask issues
I usually use a dreamwear nasal or bleep mask and usually get no leaks and an AHI below 1. When I use my ffm my 95% pressure is always higher and my AHI is usually over 2. Is it true that I will need to raise my pressures and or pressure support to tackle the apneas and hypopneas that result when I wear my full face mask. I like to wear my ffm to give myself a break from mouth taping. Is this always the case of needing higher set pressures when using a ffm?
Re: Nasal mask vs. full face mask issues
May not "always" as in set in stone but it's not uncommon either. Not sure exactly why but I have seen it too many times to pooh pooh it off either on the reports I see posted or what people tell us.
I know one guy who can get by with 2 to 3 cm LESS pressure with a nasal mask compared to what he had to use to get similar results with a full face mask.

I had to nearly break his arm to get him to even try a nasal mask.

Re: Nasal mask vs. full face mask issues
Does anyone else have a situation in which describes similar to my issue?
Re: Nasal mask vs. full face mask issues
It's been years since i used nasal pillows, but from what I remember, when i switched to ffm, clinic continuely raised my pressure from 7 to 14....

Re: Nasal mask vs. full face mask issues
Yes, I definitely have the same issue. I usually wear a nasal mask (P10) but when I occasionally switch to a full face mask, not only do I need higher pressure, but my AHI is always much worse than when I used the nasal mask. I heard it's extremely common (at least the part about needing higher pressure for a full-face mask).

Re: Nasal mask vs. full face mask issues
When you open your mouth, the mandible (lower jaw) moves backward slightly as shown in this illustration.
https://pocketdentistry.com/4-mechanics ... e%204%2D2).
When the mandible moves backward, it tends to constrict the airway. This slight constriction may mean a higher CPAP pressure is needed as compared to when the mouth is closed.
Folks, it ain't the mask, it's the movement of the jaw.

Interesting! Thanks for explaining.
Re: Nasal mask vs. full face mask issues
Thanks Chris and Chicagonanny, guess I will start making some pressure changes when I use my ffm.
Glad to know it’s a pretty common thing .
