First Night With A P10

Post by wizard_au » Thu May 19, 2022 4:56 pm

Let's dive straight into it.

I've been using an F20 since September 21, which was ok, but I couldn't get a propper seal due to my beard (needed for work, rare but true). Nick from the CPAP Reviews channel on YouTube recomended the P10, so when I finally got the cash together to buy one (Take the hint, ResMed) I gave it a try last night.
Almost everything everyone has said regarding where the design can be improved was pretty much true.
Regarding the noise issue when exhaling, the user manual only gives advice on what to do with the machine, and not the mask itself. I'm no engineer, but looking at it I can see that the "pillow" has 2 silicon layers - the one that rests against the nostril, and the other serves a dual purpose: to narrow the airflow to create the "pillow" effect, and regulate the flow of air when exhaling. Regardless of pillow size, the holes in the pillows are the same. I use a Medium, but the holes are no different to a small or large.
As many of you with a P10 that already know this, one can compare it to trying to breathe through two kettle whistles at once.
I would also venture a guess that the noise issues also would stem from those of us who breathe deeper at night, or have a higher pressure on their machines.
That being said, I'm going to attempt to make the holes on the inner pillow slightly wider to see if this (at least) reduces the noise issue. If it does, there could be potential for improvement. If not, back to the drawing board.

The sensation of irritation around the nostril was to be expected thanks to Nick's review; I consider it a minor issue and a matter of adaptation over time.

Even with the adjustable strap I found I needed to adjust the mask a few times in the night to keep a comfortable seal. Then again, I'm probably used to the dual straps of the F20.

All those issues aside, I'm still going to continue using it, and when able tweak the design where I can to improve it.
After all, if you're going to sleep with it you may as well have some fun with it

um, what? i've been using the p10 for six years and have no idea what you mean. not sure if any other p10 users will agree, but i reckon we'll find out. my mask fits properly against the nose. i hear no whistling noises at all. i use a bit of lanolin to help keep the mask slightly adhered to my nose.
I would also venture a guess that the noise issues also would stem from those of us who breathe deeper at night, or have a higher pressure on their machines.
i've used the p10 on apap with minimum pressure of 18 and max of 20. again, no whistling sound.
That being said, I'm going to attempt to make the holes on the inner pillow slightly wider to see if this (at least) reduces the noise issue. If it does, there could be potential for improvement. If not, back to the drawing board.
so you are going to take something that you had to get "the cash together to buy one" and start hacking at it? you're a brave soul than me, i'll give you that.

please let us know how it goes.

Same here.

After getting used to a pillows mask - the first ones in 2005 were no way near as soft as the p10 - I no longer needed anything to lubricate the pillows.

Sounds like you may be using the wrong size mask, which is causing the whistling noise.
Or possibly something else in the system isn't connected properly.

partly it's habit. but i'm also convinced that the lanolin is part of the reason i got so many years of life out of my mask. so i stick with it.

mind you, i could be dead wrong.

To quote Zonker, Um what?
Maybe you just need a different size pillow, I've never, *ever* had any whistling from the P10, it's as near silent as is possible to be.

Um? no, I won't do it again. My pressures start at 17/11 and go up from there, sometimes into the 20s, still no noise/whistling, yes, I can hear myself breathing,.

The common recommendation is a tiny amount of lanolin on your nostrils, it won't hurt the silicone, but it'll help

I wonder if some with particularly "slotted nares" might get a whistle or two? Or have the softer pillows made it so that nasal-pillows masks now work for almost everyone, despite nare shape? I haven't been keeping up like I should on that.

I suppose some noses may be noisier, or perhaps more musical than others.

True that. ( https://youtu.be/8FV6sFnsITc )

Seems like shape-of-nare was a hot topic in the early days of nasal pillows. Masks must have evolved since then.

The OP claims the holes are the same size on all sizes of p10 pillows.
I have applied my brand new calipers to the three sizes of brand new pillows
in my possession.(sorry, I don't have Large.)
They do look close, to the naked eye, but the length of the holes vary by a half millimeter.
The holes in medium are 10 mm.; while the holes in small are 9.5 mm.,
and xs have 9 mm holes.
I have used the p10 for many years, and no noise happens--but then I am a frog.

Does the new version of the P10 mask come with a side adjuster ? I saw a photo with one that does, mine doesn't.

Now that I have them out, I may take my calipers to a local grocery store,
where I swear their extra large eggs---aren't.
If my suspicions are confirmed, I may fink on them.
