I could go without cpap for one night--but I would also be going without SLEEP.
I cannot sleep without it.
And if I should accidentally doze off, it would mean a sore throat from snoring
and a BEAST of a headache from either cortisol overload or oxygen starvation.
I might also wake up on a wet lilypad--IF I wake up at all.
Nope--not gonna do it!

Please stay on topic in your own threads.

Thank you, sir.
Don't tell Pugsy I'm here, though; maybe she won't notice.
Well, either that, or let's find a way together to get this thread locked.
I'm good either way.

Not much gets past her.
Are you the guy who used to use an ant crawling everywhere as his avatar? Made me want to swat my screen every time I saw it.

Twasn't I. But I usually find equally offensive ways to irritate over time.
All in all, I will sign off on this one surgeon-dude's assessment on the "literature" on the question from back in 2014:
"There is some evidence that CPAP washout exists in patients with a stable BMI throughout the follow up period. However, the intensity and duration of this effect remains unclear. The studies assessed in this paper described rather small patient populations and to what extent other reasons for night-to‐night variability were controlled for (e.g., sleep position in positional OSA, changes in the percentage obstructive, mixed and central events), is uncertain. Within these limitations, based on currently available literature, it might be reasonable to maintain a washout period, with approximately one week being a possible advisable period, in case alternative OSA treatment options are considered and especially when a baseline PSG (and a followup PSG after treatment) is needed in case of clinical trials."--"CPAP washout prior to reevaluation polysomnography : a sleep surgeon's perspective," Reference: Vroegop Anneclaire, Smithuis Jim W., Benoist Linda B.L., Vanderveken Olivier M., De Vries Nicolaas.- Sleep and breathing - ISSN 1520-9512 - (2014), p. 1-7 - Full text (Publishers DOI):

Almost as wishy-washy as I am. Maybe that's why I like it!

Bummer. I am horrible when it comes to remembering screen names.
Good to see that have you risen again sir. Happy to know you are alive, well and kicking. Welcome back.

screen names . . . Welcome back. . . .

You are too kind. Seriously. May you never hurt your hand swatting at me through the screen--ants or no ants.
Thank you for all you do here. But let me not hijack Granny's thread any further. You know how sensitive she gets.

To all:
I've been lurking this thread, because I'm trying to listen and learn and because I am waiting scheduling for a in-lab reassessment. (My prior study was a home study). My doctor and I were not completely satisfied with the home study, but he prescribed an APAP to be proactive. The only communication I've had with the lab to date is that "we will call you about a week or so before the testing to go over your preparation for the sleep study"
I have not called to ask about what those preparations might be and then I saw this thread and all the comments/replys to the question about halting CPAP use before a sleep study. I assume everybody is talking about a reassessment.
So, after reading and rereading all the replys I've come to an understanding that ceasing treatment prior to a reassessment study may well be an accepted practice for some patients - and, by the way, nothing that I'm fearful about.
However there was a remark made recently that I'd like to have clarified for my own understanding.
Lazarus (whom you all seem to have high regard) said:
It can take weeks for the fluid and swelling to get back to prePAP levels.
I don't want to read into that statement, but it seems to say that PAP treatment induces/causes fluid and swelling (in the airway).
Is that how I should understand that, that a by-product of PAP treatment might be increased airway swelling and fluids?

Sorry about that bad wording. I'll fix it.
And, I'm not so much 'highly regarded' as simply "known."
Thank you for asking for clarification, and many thanks to Pugsy for providing it.
An object lesson for keeping meaningful discussions in public rather than in PMs, that, so that impressions can get easily corrected.

Talk about contradictions?
Before a sleep study some are talking about not using the cpap they already have
yet for the recall Dr's are advising the continued use?
jas32 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 25, 2022 4:25 pm
Continued using my DS1 even after the recall was announced. My sleep doctor suggested continuing its use as the risk of not using it was much greater than the foam degradation issue.
Buckle your seat belts.

Buckle your seat belts.
Moderate-to-severe always using a machine makes sense to me, even with foam trouble.
The very, very mild evaluating cessation is a different story entirely, to me.
But I definitely FULLY agree with wearing a seat belt, either way.

Thank you for the clarification.
So tomorrow I'll be calling the sleep lab and asking about "my preparation", depending on what they tell me I may be looking for some guidance from you folks.

Although "guidance" is a bit above my pay grade, I'm sure supportive information for your decision-making process in conjunction with your team can always be had here.
Members of this forum certainly had a hand in saving my life in my time of need on my PAP journey.
And if I was forced to admit it, much of what I've learned has been from material in ChicagoGranny's threads over the years.
Man, I sure hope no one ever forces me to admit that!
