Recommendation for battery for camping?

Post by wrybread » Thu Apr 21, 2022 7:49 am

I'm going on a 6 day bicycle trip next week, and looking for a battery pack for my CPAP. I think (hope!) it can be recharged every 2 days.

I'm fine with using one of those battery packs that outputs ac, since would be handy for other applications too.

Any battery that people particularly like these days?

And/or any good sales going on?

That link was a bit overly complicated for such a simple task, but for anyone else who comes looking, I picked up this Anker 256 watt hour lithium battery bank and pretty much love it:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09FF46FQ9

I'm also using this 12 volt to 24 volt step up adaptor so I don't have to use the inverter on the battery bank, which makes it a bit more efficient:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07P6H994Q

That's designed to work with the Resmed but I'm guessing there's similar products for every CPAP machine out there, with all their proprietary plugs.

I get at least two nights of sleep from my Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset with that battery before I need to recharge. I think I'd probably get 3 but I haven't pushed it yet. It recharges in a couple of hours (havne't determined the time exactly) from a car cigarette lighter socket or an AC plug.

I turn off the humidifier when using my CPAP on batteries, haven't tried it with the humidifier on.

The battery bank was $209 when I picked it up, I see it's now $249, hopefully it comes on sale again. But there's lots of ~250 watt hour lithiuum iron phosphate battery banks out there now, and I'm guessing they all work fine. I'd avoid lithium ion since it'll get something like 10x fewer recharge cycles (it won't last as long) and there's a bit of a danger of it catching on fire. And also if it's still using lithium ion it's probably outdated in other ways too.

If you need more than 2 days of battery power there's lots of bigger battery banks out there. Here's the bigger Anker (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B099YTV51Q) for example with double the capacity but also double the price and probably double the size and weight too.

I'm really liking this battery bank, it's handy for all sorts of things other than CPAP. I keep in my car for example to power my laptop for extended periods as needed. And it's sure nice to be able to go camping again without driving my girlfriend crazy with my snoring, ha.

Glad to answer any questions if anyone has any.
