For the more knowledgeable users, wouldn't the best machine (disregarding price) be an Resmed auto ASV? because it can be configured to perform like any of the simpler machines: CPAP, APAP, etc.

While we can get close to the "regular mode" settings it isn't always exactly the same.
One example that comes to my mind is when using PS in auto mode there is a default minimum that has to be used and the person can't go any lower. I think it is 3 cm but don't hold me to that exactly because it might also depend on other settings as well.
And you can't do a minimum PS to equal max PS either which would make it a fixed PS.
I don't remember if the ResMed ASV models have cpap mode as separate option. If they don't..and with the PS restrictions might not be able to exactly mimic cpap fixed mode.
Plus the ASV models don't differentiate between centrals and obstructive (no matter what mode)....everything goes in the UA unclassified apnea...basket. They do keep hyponeas separate.

So there are some setting restrictions that might cause a person to not exactly work like cpap/apap but it can be close enough for it to work in most situations.

But I understand where you are coming from with your idea and actually tend to agree with you because ASV is so very flexible in so many things that workable settings can usually be obtained in most situations.
