I don't want to hijack this thread, but this brings up a question. When the "motor life exceeded" message comes up, is it really necessary to get a new machine, or is that just to sell newer models. Assuming I have a backup (waiting for the old PRS1 foamgate replacement) is it safe to wait for problems before replacing my S10 when the message pops up?

Assuming that the machine is well cared for, I would think it would continue to function properly, but that after a certain number of hours, the manufacturers might say that as a warning, so that you don't have a machine that will just conk out all of a sudden on you... and probably also to sell more machines.

Much like a car with number of miles, this makes me ask: what is a reasonable number of hours a machine is expected to last?

Think of it as a gentle reminder notice that you might want to think about starting the process for obtaining a newer machine.
Similar to the message I get on my Keurig when it is passed the time for the routine descaling that I don't do.
We don't know how long of a life any machine might have but the odds are that the higher usage hours machines will start failing at some point. We just don't know when. It might be next week or next month or next year....or tomorrow.

As long as it seems to be working normally I wouldn't have any problems using it until it just up and gives up the ghost and dies or starts sounding like a freight train from the bad motor noise.

Besides...most insurance companies are now going to the "it must be broken" thing before they will pay for a new machine.
I doubt that the excuse "my machine says its life in terms of hours of use has been exceeded" will be enough to justify a new machine from most insurance companies. I suspect more and more to go to the "only if broken or non working" excuse.

One thing I find interesting is the AirSense 11 is using the same motor (internal turbine) as the AirMini!

The AirMini motor is louder than the AirSense 10 motor so ResMed has to pack more sound abetment foam into the AirSense 11 case to quiet the motor noise!

I'm not too keen on the longevity of the AirMini motor has opposed to the AirSense 10 motor.

I've read more stories up here about AirMini's no longer working vs. AirSense 10's!

I always research when making an investment this large. Where do I get the information on what internal blower each machine uses?

Great question. I don't know the answer.

But I believe the message may be put there to be used as an argument, or "proof," provided by the patient that insurance should pony up for a new machine if that's what the patient wants.

As to your point related to the question about the "Motor Life Exceeded" message...Nick also did a funny video about that, that is worth watch...if for nothing else, he got his kids involved and his sense of humor with his kids is probably better than most comedy's on TV these days!

Thank you! I'm really leaning toward the AirSense 10 Auto now, assuming that has a more sturdy blower and seems to be somewhat of an iron workhorse. Just so conflicted about it.

I was here previously, but wanted to start over fresh. This is, after all, the best PAP forum.

Oh but that all aspects of nonvirtual life worked that way too!

Still doing my research on a new machine. My S9 has served me well, but it does have 21K+ hours on it, and I am going to be doing some traveling. Don't want to be left in the lurch with a broken machine while away from home. Since the AS11 uses the same blower as the AS Mini, what does that mean? Is it inferior? Does it provide less quality therapy than the blower on the AS10?

I've seen some info that the AS10 has some flaws in the algorithm, so I'm not sure it would do me any better to get that machine over the AS11, but I certainly don't want a machine with an inferior turbine.

Someone tell me what to do!

Would love to see a reliable source that there are flaws in the AS10 algorithm, I'd even settle for some evidence that the Air 11 has changed the algorithm.

I'd also like to see evidence that the turbine is inferior. I'm aware that it's the same turbine as the Air Mini, but how do you know it's inferior?

I also would like to see data on this. My AS10 served me well for 6 (7?) years. I upgraded because my AS10 was making a whining noise and I'm a tech geek that always like the latest/greatest. I doubt they significantly changed the algorithms, but honestly I haven't even looked at the FDA data to see if they submitted changes to any treatment algorithms.

A couple of things I don't like about the AS11:

• The lack of swivel connector for the hose to connect to the machine. I thought I wouldn't care for the change, but I do miss the 90-degree connector and swivel of the AS10

• The touch screen is a lot of hype and will hardly ever be used. Most of us will only use the on/off button if we don't use the autostart option.

• The AS11 apparently uses the Air Mini motor, which I've read is plagued with reliability issues. The AS11 may not last as long as other units, but only time will tell.

• The AS11 doesn't have a cover if you use an SD card. The cover has a slot that slides into where the SD card goes into.

• AS11 doesn't come with an SD card. Sure, it's cheap to buy one, but it's showing that ResMed is probably going to eliminate them in the future.

• AS11's humidifier tub is slightly more tricky to insert and remove. This may be due to the seal. Maybe it improves with time.

I do think the AS11 is a little quieter than the AS10, but maybe that's because I finally got rid of a machine that developed a high-pitched whine. LOL

Mostly anecdotal evidence. I don't know that it's inferior. That was a question that came out as a statement.

So what did you decide? Also conflicted.

After reading this thread, I'm conflicted now. I was just about to go on CPAP.com and order the AirSense 11 Auto, but if it uses the same turbine as the AirMini -- is that a bad thing? -- I'm just not sure if I should get the AirSense 10 Auto instead.

I'm trying to figure out if there's anything I would be missing by getting the AirSense 10 instead.

The AS9 and AS10 have the same motor FWIW. My AS 10 has been great. I'm getting the message but thinking about waiting. I still have my old ResMed 8.
