My AZ town of 40k population swells to over 100k while snowbird RVrs are here during winter. Distilled water, pork and beans are impossible to find in stores as well as other short supply items. My wife "banks" 10 or 12 gallons in fall to get me thru winter. Yeah, the pantry has lots of beans too!

Don't be fooled by the "Distilled water" in the baby section at Walmart. If you read the label you will see that it is indeed distilled water but with minerals added!

There used to be several shelves of distilled water at our local grocery at 88 cents a gallon. Now the shelves are nearly empty, there’s a 2 gallon limit and it’s $1.48 a gallon

Lol you must be near quartzite ? We were there a couple of weeks back for the rv show. It was packed !

I bought a Vevor brand distiller on-line from Homely-Depot. It works well.

We even use it in our coffee maker. We don't get any mineral build-up.

Stopped by my local Kroger and decided to check the water aisle, just in case.

Plenty of distilled water was to be found - and I'm near the OP.

One thing I did notice though - I believe these used to be priced ~.89/gallon.
Today, I saw the price was $1.19/gallon. ...a .30 cent jump in the past two months!

I went to my local WalMart today.
Distilled water and the other drinking water were at about half usual inventory. Still plenty but lots of blank spaces.
And yes...no more 88 cent gallons of water....$1.12 I think it was. It's been that for the last 2 or 3 weeks I guess.
I may re-evaluate my distilled vs tap water situation and learn to be happy with the stink of vinegar since I usually have some vinegar hanging around. Last summer I planted cucumbers for the first time ever and had a bumper crop and learned some various pickle recipes that were out of this world good. It's funny I hate the smell of vinegar but love pickles. Go figure that one. Already planning on more cucumber planting this year.
Though at least today...I picked up another gallon of distilled.

But what was more eye opening was the meat section...chicken to be specific....absolutely totally bare except for 2 small packages of antibiotic free skinless boneless breasts.

They finally had my heavy whipping cream that has been absent for at least 2 months. I didn't even look at the price...snatched it right up.

Inventory has been so iffy last few months that I don't make real specific lists much anymore when planning what groceries to get. Now I go to the store with a generic list....like meat...I write "whatever they have that looks good" and then plan meals based on what I come home with. I wanted niblet or whole kernel corn last week for homemade soup/stew....not a single can anywhere...not even the crappy WalMart store brand. Did get the very last package of stew meat though...huge package...twice what I needed so had to find a new recipe using stew meat. Hubby said it was a perfect size package since it was the only package. He was the one wanting homemade stew.

Anyway it is what it is and bitching doesn't fix it so I just shrug my shoulders and move on.
When life gives you lemons...make as much lemonade as you can.

I've heard that citric acid works just as well, without the acetic acid 'aroma'.

Yeah...I have heard that as well. You know me though...use what is handy and cheap is my preferable method.
All this because I am bitching about an almost 30 cent increase in water prices.
I probably should do some real testing to see just how much that amounts to over a period of time and then factor in buying the citric acid and put a dollar amount to my time descaling the chamber.

I am not bitching all that much about the regular bottled water price and I use a LOT more of it than I do distilled since I use it for my Keurig. While the mineral deposits are just annoying in the water chamber if I use tap water....they can kill a Keurig or other coffee maker in 6 months. Now THAT can get expensive so I hadn't really thought about that bottled water increase. A gallon of bottled water costs the same as a gallon of distilled.
So now we know where my priorities lay.. My coffee.

Oh well...I will bitch and moan and groan but most likely still buy distilled and bitch about it and use the Keurig water when I am out of distilled because I forgot to buy it.
It's been long time since I used tap water long enough for the mineral scale to become annoying enough to require removal anyway.

well, this will certainly put a strain on my "cheap vs convenience" equation! today is our weekly grocery shopping trip. i haven't needed to replace my distilled water supply and won't need to for a bit. but i'll remember to check the shelves where i shop for distilled water and see what's up here.

we too are on well water and i really don't feel like doing the humidifier tank cleaning thing.

@Pugsy I know that you’re a Bleep user…I have noticed a SIGNIFICANT decrease in the amount of water used every night on the Bleep.

Nope, not really. It still varies mainly on how dry the ambient air is...at least for me. Some days I might use nearly all the water and some days maybe half. But then my hours of use vary so much as well it's hard to really compare.
If/when I ever get 8 hours...it's either dry or there's just an eye dropperfull in the chamber...but remember I use at least 6 humidity setting and would use 8 if I didn't get rain out in the winter. I can easily use 8 setting in the summer but just can't do it in the winter because of bedroom temps dipping.

I was off the Bleep for a while from the hand surgery thing so I used the P10 for few months and then I tried the N30...and just in last 2 or 3 weeks back on the Bleep.
I just didn't have the finger dexterity needed to mess with the Bleep until recently. Even now thumb and index finger on the right hand sometimes just doesn't want to play nice together.

I will try to make more of a mental note as to water consumption between the recent N30 usage which pretty much corresponded to P10 usage now that I am back on the Bleep.
If I can go 7 or god forbid 8 hours on half a tank of water....then you may just be on to something.

Might be worth noting, a major contributor to water loss is leaks.

When one goes to the Bleep, often they'll go from a lot of leak to zero leak. Depending on pre-Bleep leak amounts, this can explain a decrease in water use.
