Hopefully he wasn't thinking of the post from this idiot, named "lazarus":

. . . I suggest not checking AHI until the end of day to make sure expectations aren't inadvertently coloring the perceived correlation. . . . We have to do our best to double-blind ourselves with our own data. . . . Reducing one night's AHI into some sort of a Magic 8 Ball or daily horoscope that we then consider always wrong or always right is probably a fundamental abuse of what that one night's data is for anyway . . .

been a little bit and thought i'd update what's going on with my sleep apnea journey.

what i've done is simply this-i stopped worrying about my ahi. i still look at it and make note of it. but i'm concentrating more on how i feel. how am i treating myself? what happens during the time when i'm NOT in bed? am i making sure that i'm doing things that will help me to sleep well throughout the night?

"Pugsy wrote: ↑Thu May 05, 2022 11:43 am

I think we need to target your overall sleep quality if we can."

and this is where i've headed over the last 30 days. i've been keeping a journal through out. (i wish i'd written more things in the journal and will do so from tomorrow morning on.) what i've found has made me very happy. during those 30 days, i've slept continuously for 5 hours or more on 19 nights. i may have actually done more but i don't know as i didn't record my wakeup time every day in my journal.

this breaks down, according to my documentation, as going to bed at 11 and waking up at 5 for 16 nights. and for 3 nights, i went to bed at 11 and woke up at 6. i'm happy with this.

bear in mind, this isn't any mythical "sound sleep" where i pass out at 11 and wake up at 5/6. no, i'm fully aware that i wake throughout the night, as most people do. i merely roll over off of one side to the other and go back to sleep. sure, i'd really like to have that "sound sleep", but there comes a time when a guy has to realize what is realistic and what is not.

with this sleep i wake up pretty much refreshed. i make sure to write down how i feel before looking at my numbers. i'm surprised to see how i feel doesn't really relate to my ahi. in this period i've had an ahi anywhere from 0 to 3.80 or something like that. and that ahi of 3.80 didn't make me feel horrible.

a lot of what i've been doing to treat myself isn't new. i've gone back to fish oil. i've found a great pill form of electrolytes and i switch from those to a liquid based electrolyte formula. i'm doing "river walk" at ymca 2x a week. i'm doing chair yoga 1x a week. my walking and stationary biking has been cut back. but i'm doing more for my mental health by taking other breaks. i haven't really gotten to a new routine on the "movement" stuff i do, so will work more on that.

but really, i feel i'm doing right now what i need to do. i think that my main objective would be to sleep from 11-6 and then stay in bed until 8 while doing a little dozing. this is what i do now without regard to how poor or well i sleep . i just would like to make that 11-6 a routine.

i've prolly left something out here, but can't figure out what i've left out. anyway, just wanted y'all to know that i'm sleeping better and better and trying to ignore those nights when i don't.

I'm old and I'm weird--sometimes I have proof.

This is what I try to do. Sometimes I win and sometimes the bad sleep monster wins but gradually I am having more nights with more/better sleep than not.
Last night was a not so great night but it wasn't from anything I did this time. Damn cat walked on the TV remote and turned TV on.

damned cat!

the other night i had a vivid dream in which i heard a knocking on a door. i actually woke up at 3 to check my bedroom door in case wife-person had knocked. nope. as i became more awake, i realized the dog hadn't barked so there couldn't have been any door knocking at all.

so yeah, even when one is trying to get relaxed and not have any extraneous distractions, it can still leak through.

So not hypnagogia, as far as hypnagogic or hypnopompic?

particularly as i like the sound of those words. interesting to see what they mean.

and it made me think(damn you!): those words don't really describe it. so i googled "what is the word for auditory hallucinations?" and google supplied me with paracusias (shut up, spellcheck. i cut and pasted that!)

that seems fitting. i've been using a noise generator for way before i was diagnosed with sleep apnea. and one of the side effects of such a machine is that i can hear indistinct voices and other sounds, including muffled bangs and other retorts.

but i've never heard a door knocking sound before. and yet it was so vivid.

so perhaps paracusias is my word-of-the-day.
