Dreamstation One Replacement Foam Assembly (With or Without Foam) now Available on Amazon

Post by Lane101 » Thu Jan 13, 2022 9:39 pm

Hi, Does anyone have any experience with the Dreamstation 1 replacement foam assemblies now being sold on Amazon for around $30 - 35? See that they are now being sold both with and without the foam. User reviews and videos seem to indicate that the version without the foam seems to work. Post on Apnea Board from an engineer indicates that Dreamstation 1 sensors in the air flow path should still work without the noise abatement foam.

Supposedly the version with foam is using the polyether foam used by ResMed vs. the polyester foam subject to the Philips recall. While I personally would not trust any untested/fda certified replacement foam from a far east provider the foam/filter assembly without the foam could be a possible option for at least temporary use of a Dreamstation 1 until Philips gets around to supplying replacement units. Have seen the instructions for dissembling the Dreamstation and installing the replacement assembly and they seem doable for anyone with some basic mechanical skills. Also this approach makes more sense than drilling holes into the existing assembly to remove what is often already deteriorated foam.

If anyone has experience with this please reply. Also interested in others perspectives on this (assembly with no foam) as a temporary option to safely use a Dreamstation 1.

P.S. Also would not trust polyether foam per my earlier post questioning whether it is really safe and per CPAP manufacturers the Ozone cleaners also cause this foam to deteriorate resulting in voided warranties.

Looks like there was an earlier post on this. Link here to connect the the dots.

Detailed analysis of the Dreamstation airflow, sensors and any impacts on machine operations from foam removal and/or assembly replacement. Also links to videos on replacement.

If respironics chooses to do the replacements with the bricked up "Nightmare II",
DIY sounds like a decent alternative.
At least until/unless one can score a Resmed . . .

It's apparently produced by an unknown manufacturer in China. It's sold on Amazon by three different brands whose trademarks are all registered to the same New York company that lists its official address as a virtual address rented out by earthclassmail.com. I'm not sure why I'd trust that any more than Philips. You really have no idea what's in the foam or the plastic housing.

So contact the FDA, and ask them.

Sounds like a pretty good bussiness, say you make the orgional part used in the orgional XPAP sell it to Phillips, it turns out to be unsafe, but they and Philips both get paid. Then the problems start, whistles are blown. You issue a recall, but are slow to fix the product, or return the money.

Then a company, maybe the orgional part maker, starts selling the (Like Part ???), for worse or better, to be used in repairing the defective product, everyone gets paid again, by the person that bought the defective recalled product in the first place. Then if any more problems arise, the orgional maker is off the hook, as the machine has been repaired by a unauthorized repairer, replacing parts that are unauthorized!

As far as where's the teeth in the FDA in this, where are the outrageous daily fines, until the problem is resoved. Maybe Phillips just has enough money to buy off them and keep stalling. Jim

Nothing like a good Bussiness Plan.

" . . . and keep stalling."
I almost read, "And keep STEALING."
Yes, I said it--and I was not the only one THINKING it.

I will put in my 2 cents.
My wife and I just replaced the part that holds the foam with a like part (Medi....) from Amazon $30 and 2 day delivery.
Followed youtube video and the product manual - both of which are good. The only thing to point out is they do not mention in the beginning that some if not all machines have moden stuck in the "wing" opposite the SD card. I think it makes life easier to take it out at the same time as the SD card.
Current cpap foam looked undisturbed and clean black; comforting given we have used the machines for about 20 months.
Received replacement DS2 about 4 days ago and after reading reviews and judging the design changes we decided to try the "no foam" approach.
We did not use the new machine and plugged it in to view the screen; we will return the new machine unused. Next step is discuss with Phillips process to ensure the right way to return.
The above was done on my machine and my wife's replacement has not been done but we will "repair" her DS1 also. We don't like the design changes in the DS2.
