Anyone used CPAP while fighting Covid?

Post by Thumper1947 » Thu Jan 13, 2022 11:41 am

Just wondering if anyone has experience of dealing with CPAP and Covid at the same time.I haven't had it yet, but since it's so prevalent, it's a consideration to think about. It would seem like it would be hard to continue CPAP, but I could see where it might help. I'm not talking about the hospital, but home care. Any insight? Thanks.

Yes, I've had it now twice, and I used my APAP the entire time. I have a full face mask, so the fact that I was sometimes clogged up enough that I had to breath through my mouth, was not an obstacle. I am very accustomed to sleeping with my machine, and I don't sleep well without it.

The worst times were when I sneezed into my mask, and I had to wake up to clean it before I could go back to sleep. It didn't happen that often.

I have been able to use my p10 nasal pillows in spite of a stopped up nose,
by using Mucinex Sinus Max nasal spray (one squirt per side), and
a breathe right strip. So far, it has worked every time.
No Covid yet--to the best of my knowledge.
Knock on wood, and all that.

It would seem like it would be hard to continue CPAP,
It would seem that it would be harder to recover without CPAP.

Why would it be harder?

It's really no different than what we do with any other respiratory illness that we might have and still need to use cpap.

Yes, I used CPAP throughout the illness. I use the F30i mask, so I could breathe through my mouth already, but took a nasal decongestant each night to help out with the nasal breathing. I had had three shots, so covid gave me a mild fever for a couple of days and a head cold for a good two weeks.

Why would it be harder? I didn't say it would be harder, I said it would seem like it would be hard to continue CPAP. I have seasonal allergies to deal with and it mostly works out. But when I sneeze into a full face mask, that's just the beginning. Then the nose stars running, then it gets hard to breathe and I have to get up. Do this a couple of times and off comes the CPAP. I would think dealing with Covid would be worse then seasonal allergies, but I haven't had to deal with it yet. I don't think I could sleep with CPAP after what Andy described, but glad to hear that CPAP remains useful.

All depends on which symptoms happen to be worse for your infection.
My sister is just now getting over the covid...(vaccinated and boosted)...confirmed with PCR test last Saturday after sudden onset of symptoms Thursday night.

her symptoms were....
massive sore throat
some cough but not horrible
massive headache
bone crushing fatigue

She didn't have fever one...and no nasal congestion issues...no sneezing, congestion, runny nose or stuff like that.
Nothing that would have made using cpap any more difficult than any other respiratory illness.

From what I have read the covid symptoms can vary a lot between people and they are really the same symptoms we can get with the usual upper respiratory illnesses.

The only time I don't use cpap when I am ill....is when I have a stomach bug.
The reason being that sometimes when I have a stomach bug that millisecond I might need to take the mask off might end up causing me to make a massive mess in the floor that I am pretty sure I won't feel like cleaning up between the puking and pooping.

I confirmed covid on Friday. The last two nights I’ve had mild insomnia, stuffy nose, aches for a day. During the day it hasn’t been bad but sleep has been almost impossible. Switching between masks. Restless.

It helped me to take one sudafed before going to bed to temporally clear the congestion for the night.

While Sudafed may have worked for you, for most people the pseudoephedrine within it causes insomnia.

Yep. Been there done that. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.
I have 2 choices....no sleep from the congestion or no sleep from the speed.
I have a similar problem with my pain meds. My daytime pain med wires me up so I don't dare take it at bedtime or near because I will be up cleaning the house in a couple of hours if I do.
So I can either not sleep well because of the pain or not sleep well because of the pain meds.
All this despite a "may cause drowsiness" sticker on the pain meds. According to the literature less than 1 % of the people who take it will have the insomnia issue....and I guess I just got lucky.

Bummer. Do what you can to make yourself as comfortable as possible and just try not to worry.

When I get like that I take something like Nyquil. It has both anti stuffy nose meds in it and also stuff to maybe help you sleep.

It won't be great though. Even with the common cold our sleep is just screwed up.

Oh...don't panic if your machine's sleep report numbers go whacko....it's to be expected what with all the nasal congestion and false positive during awake times.
