How to clean Resmes S9 (Smoke)?

Post by zlatni » Wed Dec 29, 2021 7:20 am

Hello Cpap-Talk-Family,

I ordered a used Device Resmed S9 and was very satisfied with the package, but the whole package smelled after smoke. I thought it doesnt matter because I had my own tube and a new filter. But when im inhaling the air I smell a little bit smoke and it is really disgusting. Is there a way to clean that device somehow? Otherwise I bought a brick... :(

Thanks in advance for your help!

The best way to remove the smoke smell is to have the machine put into an ozone chamber, but that has the risk of damaging the foam inside the machine.

Do not spray anything inside the machine as that can damage internal components.

Some safer ideas…

1. Clean all hoses, masks, humidifiers, in hot soapy water, then rinse with hot water and let dry
2. Replace the filter(s)
3. Take a cloth, spray it with Febreze and place it close to the intake filter then run it for a few hours (“mask fit” will run it on max pressure)
4. Run the machine for a few hours either outside or near a fresh air source

Hopefully others have more suggestions…
Sometimes it is the very people who no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one imagines

Very difficult to remove the smoke smell completely. run the machine at an open window or outside all day..maybe even 2 days. when purchasing a used machine , always ask the number of run hours and whether it is from a non smoking home.

Then, insist on actually seeing the run hours, and smelling the device yourself, in both the off state and blowing with a hose mask.

You do not want to be breathing the Febreze, so remove that before using the cpap.

The smoke smell will fade over time, so the previous comments apply.

However, if it's heavily smoked, then that may take a long time.

You can disassemble a S9, you need a long shank T10 screwdriver, and a thin tool, and a little patience. I can take one apart and reassemble it in about 5 minutes.

To remove internal smoke stench, wipe down the hard plastics with dish soap and water (I used unscented Dawn), then I used alcohol. same with the foam. that removed all hints of cigarette smoke.

The hardest thing was the silicone, since the stink seeps into it.

For that, I recommend the same thing that's used on silicone mask parts, boiling the silicone parts in water with baking soda added.. Here's a thread that discusses it: https://www.cpaptalk.com/viewtopic.php?t=73455
