Tear in Hose Tubing: Recommendations for Repair
Tear in Hose Tubing: Recommendations for Repair
Hi All,
This morning while trying to remove the mask elbow from the silicone sleeve on the hose tubing, the tubing pulled away from the silicone end (see picture below). Any recommendations for a quick repair?
I have the ResMed AirSense S11, so most replacement parts will be hard to come by over the next few months until the device becomes more widely available.
Will traditional electrical or duck tape work? Alternatively, I’ve considered cutting away the ripped plastic and gluing the tubing back into the elbow ‘housing’.
Any advice is appreciated as I’m very new to CPAP.
Thanks,
Brandon

That looks like a heated hose. no clue about getting a new one quickly.
You should be able to get a *regular* hose tonight at a local truckstop, many of them carry basic supplies because many truckers use CPAP.
You may be able to use duct tape to make that tear temporarily airtight, till you can get another hose.

Duct tape should do the trick for a short term fix. Not sure about electric tape but it might work as well.
You can use any non heated hose with the AirSense 11 until you can find a heated hose.

If using an unheated hose, when you have been using a heated hose,
a hose cover is recommended. Padacheek.com has some nice fleece ones.

You need a new hose. I keep a spare hose around if I need it. If you have Medicare, they will send you a new one for free every 3 months. if you need a hose in a hurry. your local Cpap shop will have it. look on eBay too.
Re: Tear in Hose Tubing: Recommendations for Repair
duct tap on a hose that helps make you breath a little better. very poor advice.
Re: Tear in Hose Tubing: Recommendations for Repair
Totally incorrect statement above. If you have Medicare, they will send you a new one for free every 3 months
Just a point of clarification about Medicare and cpap supplies. CPAP supplies come under the Part B provisions...it's an 80/20 situation for all Part B items.
Medicare only pays for 80% of the approved amount and the patient is responsible for the remaining 20%.
Now the patient may also have some sort of medicare supplement, that they pay for, which will in turn pick up and pay that remaining 20% copay balance.
Medicare itself doesn't ever pay 100% for any Part B goods or services.
Now sometimes the DME might waive that 20% copay balance...which will make it appear like Medicare is paying 100% but it's not.
The above pertains to Medicare and or any supplemental coverage that a patient might have.
If the patient has opted for some sort of Medicare Advantage plan those are or can be different in many ways depending on the individual plan. Most often it is just an 80/20 thing (assuming any pertinent deductibles have been met if there are any) and the patient pays the 20% copay.
I just wanted to make it clear that hoses aren't totally free if someone is using Medicare.
I didn't want for people to get the wrong idea how Medicare works with cpap equipment or accessories like masks or hoses or whatever.

Re: Tear in Hose Tubing: Recommendations for Repair
And not using cpap at all because the hose has a massive hole in it is a better option??
A tear as big as shown in the OP image makes it impossible to get any sort of effective therapy....it's useless with the existing tear.
Duct tape, vet wrap, regular tape....all have been used in a pinch when the hose is torn to help get by until a replacement hose can be obtained....been that way for years.
You don't know what you are talking about....proved a second time considering that you also don't know how Medicare works.
When it comes to very poor advice maybe you should be looking in the mirror instead of casting stones.
Have a nice day.

Re: Tear in Hose Tubing: Recommendations for Repair
Another comment about the AirSense 11 heated hose....I can't find it anywhere as a stand alone separate purchase.
The one place on the web that I saw it as an option also said "out of stock".
Now the DME who supplied the original machine and heated hose might be able to sell someone another heated hose if they have any spares....that would be who I contacted first....if the machine was obtained through a brick and mortar DME store.
Right now, due to the newness of the AirSense 11 machines, the heated hoses are going to be in short supply when wanting a separate stand alone purchase. Most will be packaged with the machine.
This will ease up in time as production increases and demand decreases.
In the meantime a short term solution until some sort of hose can be obtained...is simply taping the heck out of the tear in the hose to close it up.
Non heated hoses will fit and those are available everywhere...some extremely cheap.
And before we start squawking about the non heated hose...the heated hose torn that badly is not going to heat up anyway.
The circuit is obviously broken.

Re: Tear in Hose Tubing: Recommendations for Repair
I have medicare. my plan gives me a new hose every 3 months. my supplemental Plan F picks up what medicare wont pay.
I laugh when somebody recommends a simple repair with duct tap with respiratory equipment. dust tape is made with a chemical. you breath in the chemical while you sleep. it make more sense to keep a spare hose around if you need it on the spot.
every 6 months my plan gives me a new mask for free.
when you buy healthcare you get what you pay for. medicare pays 80 percent. my plan F pays the rest. plan F is not cheap. new people can't get Plan F. they have to get plan G.

Re: Tear in Hose Tubing: Recommendations for Repair
Believe it or not...you...and all others on Medicare ARE paying for it. Part B goes up every year and the cost of Medicare supplements increase also. many of the increases are because of people that abuse their benefits. Taking everything that you can because it's "free" is part of the reason out health care is so expensive.Ray4852 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 10, 2021 11:31 amI have medicare. my plan gives me a new hose every 3 months. my supplemental Plan F picks up what medicare wont pay.

Re: Tear in Hose Tubing: Recommendations for Repair
So if your *only* options tonight are sleep without CPAP, or cobble together a temporary repair with tape until you can get a new hose in your hands, you would go with the no CPAP option?
Meaning it is anything but "free".

Your sir are way off track with your comments. Believe what you want but please stop with the misinformation...it will be promptly removed if you persist with it. If you want to think that paying for Part B each month and your Plan F premiums equals "free"...whatever dude. I really don't care but the misinformation will be corrected. Get over it or move on. You don't know nearly as much as you think you do.Ray4852 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 10, 2021 11:31 amI have medicare. my plan gives me a new hose every 3 months. my supplemental Plan F picks up what medicare wont pay.

To everyone else.....
Okay folks...I will end the "Medicare" discussion...no more OT comments please. Further OT posts will be removed.
Get back on topic please.....
Last comment about Medicare....it isn't free and neither are any supplements someone might opt to purchase.
We pay for Medicare part B...every month and we pay for supplements if we opt to go with traditional Medicare and/or regular supplemental polices.
Medicare DOES NOT EVER SUPPLY ANYTHING FOR FREE....no matter how much someone wants to put it in the "free" basket.
Number 1...we don't even know if the OP in this thread has Medicare or not....so bringing Medicare into the discussion is irrelevant and/or off topic.
Number 2...the topic was how to fix an unusable hose short term until a replacement hose can be obtained.
Number 3...duct tape has long been used because it's better than not using the cpap machine. So have other forms of tape. Whatever can get a person a seal so the pressure can be maintained is fair game to try. It's meant to be a SHORT TERM fix.
Last I heard no one from Medicare or the DME is going to come out and bring a new hose at 9 PM right before bedtime.
This is why I always suggest people have a spare of everything if possible.....crap happens and things do get broken or torn.
And with that....back on topic (and news flash...it isn't Medicare) or watch your post go poof and disappear.
Me personally...I would much rather deal with any chemicals from duct tape than the glue fumes that might be present if someone tried to glue the hose back together. Glue that will adhere to silicone is going to off gas a lot more than duct tape will.
Edit....
BTW....don't go political with replies...that's a guarantee for quick removal. I just removed one from the member here who knows it all but really doesn't know jack crap. He posted it while I was composing my reply here.
Take your politics elsewhere Ray....this isn't the place for that crap.

Re: Tear in Hose Tubing: Recommendations for Repair
If that is a Heated AS11 tube, it will be hard to find. Your DME *may* have one on hand. When I got my AS11, the DME was (and still is) backordered about 4 weeks on these. I treat my AS11 tube and humidifier like FABERGE EGGS right now, because replacements are not easily available.
Choices are a tape repair (but if the wire is broken, still no heat) or any standard unheated tube. If you go with an unheated tube, you'll probably want a cover for it as well. Those are pretty available online, or your DME may have one, or you can wrap just about anything around the hose in a pinch (and secure with more handyman's secret weapon).
Regarding the "breathing chemicals from duct tape" comments above.... Please. All my household heating air ducts are all sealed with duct tape, so I assume I am going to die any moment now.
