AirSense 11 general questions

Post by gosman » Sun Nov 28, 2021 3:00 pm

Finally got my AirSense 11 yesterday after massive sourcing effort on my part (not Doctors). I have some general questions.

1. No SD card. Technician said I would need to order one from ResMed. Will not a regular SD card work?

2. I live in north Texas and last night humidity control set at 4 and temp. at 68 degrees F. It was off of automatic. It got down to about 67 degrees in the house and air pretty dry. My temp. control tubing filled with water and woke me up after about 4 hours with gargling sound. I purged the hose of all the water and turned humidity down to 2. No more condensation of water in hose. At the end of my 7.5 hour sleep, the water container was empty. Do you keep it on auto or go manual like me? If manual, what are your settings? How often are you refilling your reservoir? My S9 would hold several days of distilled water!!!

3. I thought the temperature controlled hose is suppose to control condensation? Why did the hose fill with water.? My S9 never did this?

Otherwise pretty happy with the machine although I loved my S9. Time to join the rest of you guys!

1. Any SD card will work. Doesn't have to be a ResMed branded card...besides all those "ResMed" cards are nothing but very cheap, bought in bulk, generic SD cards that ResMed sticks their label on.
It's always been that way from the S9 models to the current AirSense 11 models.
If you have the old S9 card laying around....erase the contents and use that old card. As long as it isn't damaged it will work fine. I currently use a Sandisk SD card bought at WalMart....it's been through countless S9 models and several AirSense/AirCurve models.

2. You need to either reduce the humidity setting (which you did) or increase the heated hose air temp to prevent condensation in the hose or mask.
Don't count on the "auto" setting for humidity or hose air temp to work like we expect it to work. I have used the "auto" for both and sometimes it works pretty good and sometimes it fails horribly. A lot depends on the ambient temp in the bedroom though. The cooler it gets in the bedroom the harder time the heated hose has with getting warm enough and fast enough to ward off condensation.
You have to just play around with the settings.

As far as water consumption...3 things can affect it.
1...Ambient room humidity....this is the primary culprit when we use up a lot of water...along with the machine humidity setting.
2...Pressures used. The higher the pressures the more water will be used.
3...Leak rate. The higher the leak rate the more water will be used....not usually not much of a factor unless someone spends a prolonged period of time in large leak.

3...because of a combination of factors that may simply not have come together with the S9.
Humidity delivered...hose air temp...ambient room temps. Unless EVERYTHING is exactly the same you really can't compare the end results. Too many variables.

Increase your hose air temp and it will prevent condensation unless you are happy with less humidity overall.

My nose actually likes the setting of 8 for humidity.
My sleep actually likes a cold bedroom...not a good combination for preventing condensation.
In the winter when the bedroom runs around 60 degrees or less...the max temp of 86 just won't prevent condensation with the setting of 8. I can get by with the setting of 6 though. Not ideal but it's the best I can do unless I want to warm up the bedroom which I don't want because then I can't sleep well because it's simply too warm for my preference.

Hello @gosman,

Congrats on your new AS11.

1. Any SD card will work. You're best getting one <32gb, but I've tested up to 256gb and they work fine. If the AS11 doesn't like the format (i.e., >32gb cards usually come formatted ExFat and the AS11 doesn't like that) then the AS11 will automatically reformat it. But even 8gb is more than enough for years of data, so no reason to spend more for anything larger.

2 & 3. As an AS11 user myself, who sleeps in a fairly cool (63F) room, I recommend initially trying the "Auto" setting for both humidity and tube temp. The AS11, unlike many older machines, actually has a humidity sensor in the tube (at mask end) so it can monitor the temperature and relative humidity, trying to avoid dewpoint (condensation) problems automatically. It is really good -- though not perfect. Still worth starting there and seeing how it works. If the Auto doesn't work for you, then you can switch to manual. Personally, I had some minor condensation (again, I'm in a cold room) on Auto, so left Humidity on Auto but switched to "manual" for the tube and raised it a few degrees.

Good luck!

If you are going to use an SD Card that has data from a previous CPAP(any type), delete the older data or reformat the SD Card.

OSCAR can get confused when it sees data files from multiple devices and may not import your data correctly.

One think I have noticed right away, my new AirSense 11 is a little louder than my old S9. I've done a side- by- side sound test with pressure. I've heard that the smaller they get the noisier they get.
