Any experience with the Jackery battery for a Resmed?

Post by wrybread » Sun Nov 21, 2021 10:43 am

I'm looking for a battery to power my Resmed 10. I don't use heat or even humidity, since I live in a moist area. I need a way to power my CPAP for 2 or 3 nights. Any thoughts on whether this battery pack will work?

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D29QNMJ/

That pack is 240 watt hours with a true sine inverter.

I haven't measured the power consumption from my CPAP but from reading it can be as low as 10 watts once it gets going, which should be about 20 hours or so. That would do it, but I'd love to confirm before buying it.

Or any ideas for another battery pack?

I doubt you will get 2 to 3 nights off of it, if you are using AC.

When using a CPAP off battery, you should be using DC. ForResMed's this means their expensive DC-DC Converter or a third party equivalent.

240 Watt hours, works out to be 12 Amp hours (12v). The estimate I use for draw is approximately .75 AH for ResMed's, no heat, no humidity. So with on DC you'll get about (12 / .75) 16 hours. On AC maybe a night.

I have not used anything like this made in the last 10 years, mine is a pretty old auto jump starter with a smaller lead acid battery and all analog.

For a few dollars more, other things being equal, with the one below you get a LiFePO4 battery (allegedly lasts more cycles, and not prone to catching on fire like a bad Lithium ion battery can), a bit more capacity, and some extra outputs like extra inverter plug, 2 USB-C (60W and 30W PD ports) and a 12v DC cig lighter port.

As mentioned above you want to be using DC if at all possible, so with the below you could plug the Resmed DC-DC voltage multiplier into the cig lighter plug and get alot more usage out of one charge (no DC-AC-DC conversion going on is way more efficient).

240 Watt hours, works out to be 12 Amp hours (12v).
Unless my math is wrong (which is possible!) 240 watt hours = 20.8 amp hours at 12 volts.
The estimate I use for draw is approximately .75 AH for ResMed's, no heat, no humidity.
And that's at 12 volts? So to be clear, you're saying a Resmed uses .75 amps @ 12 volts (9 watts) when powered directly by DC?

Thanks for that amenite! Looks like a great unit.

Has anyone here used that GOLABS Portable Power Station?

mowog73 found the Golabs brand, and has tried it (not with a Resmed 10 though):

Yes you're correct, my math was wrong. 240wh at 12v should be 20ah.

The estimate I use for draw is approximately .75 AH for ResMed's, no heat, no humidity.

Yes, that's at 12v.

Here's the ResMed Battery Guide.

https://document.resmed.com/documents/a ... lo_eng.pdf

Their charts have a built in safety margin of 50% to guard against overdrawing lead acid batteries, LiFePO4 don't have the same drawing concern.

And No, I'm not saying that ResMed's use exactly that, it's the estimate I use. The draw is dependent on pressure and variable on autoset devices so it can't be absolute stated. The charts in their Battery guide lists draw based on pressure in ams.

AFAIK, Resmed is strictly 24 volts, with all critical connectors effing PROPRIETARY!
As we have noticed lately, they can totally get away with it.
Camping is not considered "medically necessary".
Next time, consider "glamping". Your family might actually like it.

Unless you're using a Freedom V2 Li Ion battery that detects and supplies the necessary 24v for Resmed, then yes you would also need the Resmed Airsense 10 DC-DC voltage multiplier to get from 12v DC to 24v DC, in addition to whatever 12v battery you are using:

All of the manufacturers are 'proprietary', Resmed, Respironics, Dell, Lenovo, HP, and they keep changing them.

I have four different notebook power supply connectors for various ages of notebooks all from the same manufacturer.

There's really nothing unusual about changing power connections over time.

The only really strange connector I've seen from Resmed is the S9 power supply, the Air10 machines looks like the previous power connector from some Dell and Lenovo laptops, the new one on the 11 looks like what's on the newer Thinkpads.

Those battery packs are good for people that want something easy to use. The market is saturated with different kind of battery power packs now. for the money there ok, but if you have a problem with one. you have to send it back for service. the parts they put in these packs are cheap. I build my own power station. if I have a problem with it I fix it. its powered with a lithium battle born battery 100 amp hour with the Victron battery smart shunt. the plugs and wire are all marine grade. my inverter is a 300 watt samlex that uses very little power. I have the air sense 11. only way I can power my cpap now is use my inverter with no humidity and heated hose. I haven't tried it yet. my guess I will draw 15 watts per hour. once resmed comes out with the DC converter I should be able to draw less than one amp. I never run my battery down 50 percent. thats to low for me. I like 35 percent. battery will last longer. don't go small on a battery. buy more than enough power you need. if you run them down. you be buying a new one soon. I heard resmed will have the dc converter for the air sense 11 next year. I hope by spring.

The ResMed AirMini DC-DC Converter has been verified to work with the Air 11

this will work for you. if you use your cpap for 8 hours. lets make it one amp instead. one amp is 12 watts. 96 watts for one night. you could go for 2 nights. if I had this unit one night is all I would use it for. charge it up to full each day. if you want to go for 3 days. get the 600 watt hour one. for 300 dollars. you can buy a 100 amp AGM Vmax and have more than enough power to play with.

That's pretty close to my experience. Mine uses .8 amps, but maybe my pressure is a little higher. That's with no heat/humidity.

If it proves out at 240 watt hours you should be able to get two nights easily. I use about 80 watt hours per night.

I saw it already. do you believe it. I don't. resmed said its not compatible with the air sense 11. when resmed says its compatible with the air sense 11. I will get it. the air pump and plug might be the same. the circuit board is not the same. I can wait till spring.
