new or used

Post by onward60 » Thu Oct 21, 2021 9:49 am

I'm wondering if there's a way to tell if a machine I got is new or used.

 Thanks. 321 hours, 10 of which are mine. This thing smells like it's been in somebody's home who uses plug-in air fresheners. Makes me ill. I wonder if I just take the mask off and turn it on and let air run through it if it will get better.

Where did you get the machine? Did they tell you it was new?

They didn't say either way. They just said it was a 3-month trial. Perhaps it was somebody else's 3-moth trial before me.

If you bought it from a supplier, take it back.

If you bought it from a private party "you pay your money and you take your chances".

I think a used machine would be not great for me because if the user smoked, used scented lotion or perfume, , scented sprays, air fresheners or "aroma therapy" sleep aids I couldn't tolerate it.

You might try running it outside in fresh air for a good long time and see if it helps. But I find some things linger forever, especially the scented products people like to use to stink up their houses and their own bodies because the scents are oil-based. Most are truly air pollutants--hydrocarbon distillates, but there's so much advertising hype that people think they are wonderful.

Because of asthma and sensitivity to fragrances, I can't walk down the soap and laundry aisles of a grocery store, walk into craft stores this time of year, walk into a home where they have scented candles, air fresheners, oil diffusers, cinnamon brooms, etc., try on clothing that people reeking of perfume tried on before me (and these scents don't always wash out of clothing!), sit next to people wearing perfume, cologne, scented lotions, or strong laundry products. My world is getting smaller and smaller because scent sells. One nice thing about Covid is that mask wearing is now acceptable and definitely helps.

Sometimes the added scent is so strong that people with no sensitivities are affected

Hi onward60,

Many brands of 'air freshener' seek to mask a bad smell with a (hopefully) stronger, more intense good smell. But that doesn't always work. The molecules of both substances are still in the air space.

A better way to reduce smells is to introduce into the air space droplets which combine with the offensive smelling droplets and neutralize them. Such a product is the Swiss-made Neutradol, widely available in Europe.

I don't know if it, or an equivalent, is available in your location. But if you can get some – or something like it – you might use either the air-spray form or the evaporating-gel form near the air intake of your machine, and with the machine running.*

Depending on the intensity of the perceived bad smells, you might only have to do this odour removal process* once or twice.

RB.

* I should add, I have no idea if this product might harm the sound-reducing foam in any brand of CPAP machine. If there is, then there might be a trade-off for any user – one or two exposures to the airborne gel, very little effect on the foam. Continued and repeated exposure, significant changes, and to be avoided.

I did run it and run it. It didn't help. It is a loaner machine that the DME gives out for the 3-month trial. I think after the trial I give it back and get a new machine. I hope!

Want to say thanks for the ideas. For some reason I am not getting the new notification alerts so I am not seeing all the responses. My memory has been impaired rather randomly. Maybe it depends how much sleep I got. I have a hard time finding things on the site, especially if I don't even remember the site exists or that I asked a new question. :? But I probably will accidentally find things eventually. Probably.

If it's a loaner, I'd take it back and ask for another one that doesn't have that smell, especially if it's harmful to your health.

All the scented air "fresheners" are indoor air pollutants. They are not good for anyone's health, and I think it's reasonable to ask for a replacement.

You have to be careful with DME's. After your 3 month trial they are likely to say "congratulations, this machine is now yours" (via private payment or insurance payment). If they balk at giving you another machine that's brand new, they will claim it's because you are the one who used this machine. You won't have much evidence that it was used before you got it, even if you saw 300+ hours on it because they are likely to deny that. So take care of it now. Tell them it has this smell and it's bothering you and you want to swap it for a machine that doesn't have that smell.
