Phillips Device Replacement

Post by Captain_Midnight » Tue Oct 19, 2021 12:35 pm

Hi Folks!

Occasional visitor Cpt Midnight here, with what might be old news and a comment.

Phillips, in an email I just received, says that they now have FDA approval to initiate the repair and replacement program for the affected paps (and other) machines. The process will occur over many months.

That's nice, I suppose, but here's what they say...

Philips is notifying customers and users of affected devices that the company will replace the current sound abatement foam with a new material that is not affected by this issue. Affected devices currently will be either replaced with a new or refurbished unit that incorporates the new material, or repaired to replace the sound abatement foam in customer units. The new material will also replace the current sound abatement foam in future products. (Bold supplied)

I'm all for a machine (actually, I've got two, a Dreamstation and a Go) that has less toxic foam, however I choose to be unwilling to accept a "refurbished" anything. If I have no idea where a machine has been, it has no place in my bedroom. That's that.

Also, if we're talking replacement, I choose like-for-like. I don't want a new model that I know little about.

I write these notes here for general interest, and also because I could not find a convenient place on the PR website to provide patient/customer feedback.

As is often the case, someone on this fine forum will contribute more info to the little that I know, and I thank them in advance.

My experience is similar and I received the same "update" email. It didn't really update me on anything new. It basically repeated their last "communication."

Good luck.

I got the letter today as well. But I also got a new Dreamstation 2 on September 8 with no warning. This is all being done out of order and randomly. I can't figure it out at all.

And I did not realize that the new machine did not include an SD card and I sent mine back with the old machine. Fortunately I had also bought a new machine over the summer and pulled the card from there to put in this one. If the insurance company or doctor balks at the lack of data, I can always fall back on the fact that I was told by everyone not to use the machine for 3 months!!!!

When did you register? I wasn't even notified about the recall until September 14.

My son, mom, and sister-in-law all have recalled Dreamstations; the only reason any of them learned about the recall was because I found about it on this forum and told them about it. I registered my son’s machine in mid June, my mom registered hers a week or so later, SIL registered hers early July. My mom was surprised when a Dreamstation 2 randomly showed up at her house about a month ago, I was surprised when my son’s new Dreamstation 2 showed up today, SIL is still waiting.
Communications from Philips to my family members about the recall has been nearly non existent. I did receive one generic random email similar to what you posted months after I registered my son’s device, but otherwise nothing. It’s surprising to me that Philips didn’t even bother to notify us when they shipped the new machine, it’s lucky it wasn’t delivered a couple of days ago when my family was out of town and we had an early October snowstorm.

My knowledge is limited, so take this with a grain of salt. From what I’ve read Philips gained approval to start repairing some devices affected by the recall on 9/1/2021. My guess is that until this point Philips has been sending new units out to everyone because repairs were not FDA approved, but as the FDA approves repair plans for certain machines some people may start receiving refurbished units as replacements.

I registered in mid-June. I didn't hear from Philips about the recall until after I received my new machine! I didn't hear from my doctor nor from my DME. I got some email from another forum I must have registered with that mentioned it.

This refurbishment business, I have to say of the three PR machines I have, one has like 6 years' use on it and I am inclined to keep it since if there were any long term issue I would have it in its original state. The second one has several months on it, OK refurbish that one. But one of them is brand new unopened in box. I really don't want a substitute refurbished unit in exchange for one brand new in box.

Well, I guess it's a good thing I drop in here from time to time.

Neither Phillips nor the DME have deigned to tell us about this recall.

I've just registered our home devices; will have to travel out to the RV and get the numbers of our travel CPAPs and register those.

Home devices are both Dream Stations -- my ASV from 2017 and his autoCPAP from 2019. RV devices are my System One ASV from 2014 and his DreamStation Auto from early 2020 which I got him so he didn't have to pack everything up, either. (Because I usually ended up being the one to pack it and make sure everything was there.)

All of were brand-new when we got them. No, no, Phillips, I do not want a refurbished item that I have no idea where it's been. With my luck, I'd get one that stinks of smoke.

If you get a replacement Dreamstation 2, drag your feet on returning the recalled unit. Treat Phillips like they are treating us.

The more I learn about the DS 2, the less I'm inclined to accept it.

The memory card is apparently a pain to access, and, it does not work with Oscar.

Why would I ever accept a machine that would not let me analyze my nightly therapy/progress so I can continually optimize my results?

I received the DS2 about a week ago. I have a FEDEX account and they were the only notification I had from the tracking info they emailed me when it was shipped. I was hoping my DS1 was going to be fixed as I don't care for the physical design of the DS2. I did power up the DS2 to verify it worked and during the power up it 'called home' and downloaded the settings that were on file for my DS1. It also reassigned my DreamMapper app (Win7 on a PC) to the DS2 removing the DS1 in the process. I've had good numbers with my prescription settings on the DS1 and with those same settings in the DS2 they are even slightly better, so I'm not too concerned about further optimizing and lack of OSCAR capability at least for now. I'll put an SD card in sometime in the near future even though it presently serves no purpose. It will record data history so if OSCAR ever does become compatible I can use the historical data that was recorded.
The DS2 is quiet and doesn't seem to 'push' the air like the DS1 one did. Functionally I don't have complaints, just physical aspect of the unit bothers me.

A better night with the DS2 and others are similar.
