ResMed AirCurve 10 VAuto turning off spontaneously

Post by McSleepy » Fri Oct 08, 2021 3:27 pm

I believe I have read about this on here, but not with AirCurves and nothing recently, so I thought I'd ask. Is there a known issue with AirCurve 10 turning off spontaneously? This morning as I was sleeping, my machine shut off for no apparent reason. I do have the auto-start/stop enabled, but looking at the data, I see no excessive sustained leak, and I know the mask needs to be completely off (i.e., no backpressure at all) for that to kick in. I took off my mask to see whether something had gotten loose, but there wasn't, and I simply turned the machine back on and went back to sleep. I was wondering if there may be something to take care of here since my machine is fairly new (14 months).

Have you checked all the electrical connections between the machine, brick and wall? - Signed: Captain Obvious

This is FYI for anyone who may have run into a similar problem. So, it happened again the night before and I decided to do some research and experimentation. I looked at the data from the exact moment it happened and I noticed that the there had been a significant air leak (I had been having those lately; it's my high pressures combined with a few other factors), exceeding 60 l/min. I have the automatic start enabled on the machine (I like the convenience of not having to reach for the "start" button since my machine is in a drawer by the bed), but that feature also causes an automatic shutoff when it thinks the mask has been taken off. I feel that's unnecessary at best, and if it must be present, it should have its own setting, but that's how the AirCurve is designed. So I decided to determine at what leak level the auto shutoff activates and this morning I started pulling the mask slowly as I was breathing with it, until the machine shut off. Then I looked at the data and, indeed, as the leak level gradually increased, at 54 L/min, and after 10 seconds above 46 L/min (or 20 seconds above 24 L/min, could be any time interval), the AirCurve eventually shut off. The "time above leak level" is probably not the only criterion for shutoff, there better be an elaborate algorithm for determining that (although, with everything else in the design of those machines, it would not surprise me if it's just that simple), but this seems to be a safe indication that the AirCurve will shut off because of what it thinks is an excessive leak, if the "SmartStart" feature is enabled.

I know this won't help those of us with Air 10s, but this feature has been implimented in the Air 11.

The SmartStart On and Off option has been decoupled into two separate options.

Oh, did I miss the announcement for the AirCurve 11? I had been postponing updating my machine, waiting for the 11, and since there was no word, I got a 10 last year. Anyway, where can I read some info on it? is the clinician's manual out already? I'm curious to see what other differences from the 10 there are. Although, I bet what I want (as simple as it is) will never happen. :?

No, I never said anything about the AirCurve 11, I said Air 11.

The presumption being, since the AirCurve 10 has the same hardware, and non-Curve setup as the AirSense line. We can expect that when the AirCurve 11 gets released, it too will have a decoupled SmartStart On/Off.

My Airsense 11 not only shut off on it's own, it kept turning itself on in the middle of the afternoon, blowing full bore into empty air. I turned the features off.

Maybe it needs a sensitivity adjustment . . .
