New member from Canada

Post by Michel1949 » Sun Sep 19, 2021 1:42 am

My name is Michel 72 yo and thought I would say hello , I’m from Quebec Canada.
Since a while my wife has been complaining about me snoring and stop breathing often during my sleep.
I sleep a few hours at the time and I am always tired so I sleep in the afternoon and often after the diner.

I went to check on youtube and many are talking about Apnee du sommeil (Apnea sleep).
Then I went to see my family doctor and he made me go to an hospital test a few weeks ago and I asked information in a few apnea place around where I live and asked them question and most likely I have the apnea problem and of course they are all selling equipments.
My problem is I sleep a little at the time, quit breathing often, snore, take a few moments to think about things, and else. I din't get the report yet it may take a week or 2.

I have a friend who has that problem for many years (13) and he told me I should get a sleep machine.

With his experience he told me I would need a sleep machine and he knew someone who had a used one for sale.
So I bought this ResMed S9 from his friend and on amazon I bought some filters, a heated hose, and a complete full face mask Amara View and a few bottle of distilled water which have arrived for that s9 machine.
I asked him if it wasn't too early to get the stuff and he told me I was gonna need all these articles soon.

I did some research on youtube about the ResMed s9 with the H5I reservoir, as everyone knows on Youtube you see many people trying to explain how it works with different words and the most important for these people is to sell stuff that they post in them videos.
After viewing a few hundreds videos I came to see OSCAR on one of them and by miracle the guy is a specialist who offers his help from 150.00 to 500.00 USD and further along the searching for OSCAR I found out today about CPAPTALK and I join to find out if I can learn about Oscar or get any help if possible.

Thanks for your time and patience
Michel

Dang! You can get that much money for helping people? I know Canadian money has a different exchange rate. Did I say dang!? Anyway. The way it usually works is that a new person just starting gets very little instruction and maybe wrong advise from the place that sells you the equipment... did I say dang? But leaving the place that sells you the equipment (called a DME.... Durable Medical Equipment), you should be able to set the equipment up, put on the mask, and start/stop the machine, and maybe a few pointers. You may be able to get that info on YouTube. The biggest suggestion I can give you is to read all the info here on top of the homepage. There's enough info here to maybe answer your questions and REALLY get you started. If you have a particular question, do a search here. If you don't find the answer.... ask away here. We all started out as you did, so don't feel bad. We are here to help you. Dang!

Coverage in your province for CPAP doesn't appear to be very good. Also, the price I found on-line is a bit higher than in the US, even with the exchange rates taken into account.

If you really can't afford it, there may be programs that help.

Since I'm now medicare age (65 in the US), I can get a new one every five years.

OSCAR https://www.sleepfiles.com/OSCAR/
http://www.apneaboard.com/wiki/index.ph ... stallation
http://www.apneaboard.com/wiki/index.ph ... rpretation

This stuff isn't rocket science so most people can usually learn to evaluate what OSCAR shows with a bit of help.

The S9 models have some limits as to how much data gets stored on the SD card and which models even gather data.
So it would be helpful to know exactly which model S9
and if it is a full data model people need to download at least once a week or risk losing some detailed data.

You may get lucky finding a machine at Secondwindcpap.com (U.S) without a script (I did) and their service is great and prices a lot greater than the Can. ones!

I din't get the prescription as of yet guess the specialist has a lot of patient to do.

I have tried the Amara view full face (medium size)
Since it's a full face (mouth and nose) do you need to keep your mouth close?

No, but that being said, the mask has been known to leak often.

Which is the best brand of full face mask that most of the users use
I have bought the Amara view full face and there is a lot of leaking. I tried to follow what they showed on YouTube and not working too well.

The Dr office called me this afternoon and told me to pickup the prescription on Monday

Then I must find a place to enter the prescription in the ResMed S9 autoset/epr
Is there something I should know before I go to any of the 8 places that does it in my area.
So far over the phone one place told me a few days ago it would cost 50.00 and they would do it no service included If I buy a mask from them it would be free and a follow up.
Another place told me 500.00 and a follow up for 6 months If I buy a mask from them it would be 400.00.

There's no reason at all for you to pay anyone to setup the machine settings.
It's easy to do. All you need is the secret combination of button pushing to get into the clinical setup menu area.

Go here and request the clinical manual for your machine
https://www.apneaboard.com/adjust-cpap- ... tup-manual
It will explain how and there is also a video that shows how.
Do get the manual though....some good information in it.

As for masks...it's trial and error and one person's treasure is another person's trash.
The Respironics DreamWear full face mask is probably a more improved version of the Amara View which was never a very popular mask.

You might also look at the ResMed F30 which seems to be more popular and more people satisfied with it.

Take a stroll through the various masks here
https://www.cpap.com/category/cpap-masks

Why only looking at full face masks? Chronic nasal congestion?
Can you breathe through your nose during the day?
Nasal masks are much easier to keep sealed.

As Pugsy says, nasal masks are much easier to keep sealed. Think about the larger area that full face masks cover...there is that much a larger area to leak out through.
