Bed Pillows That Work With Your Mask?

Post by XtraSpicyQuesadilla » Sat Sep 18, 2021 10:53 pm

Hi, all!

I have big, fluffy, shredded foam pillows, and I'm finding that that's not really so great when I have a giant hose coming out of the middle of my face. I know there are masks with the hose on the top of the head, but I'm also limited in what kind of mask I can use (see: silicone sensitivity and teeny tiny nostrils that apparently don't have the expected curvature). So, hit me with your pillow recommendations that will accommodate your hoses! Doing a search in the forums brought me to the Pur-Sleep pillow (which I'd also love to hear your experiences with), but all the rest of the results were talking about nasal pillows, which is not what I'm looking for!

With 15+ years sleeping with CPAP, I've used quite a few of the pillows designed for CPAP. All were just fine, though not really necessary. Used a buckwheat pillow for years. Sculpted out my own inexpensive foam pillow. Now I just go for any pillow that is flat and very firm. My fluffy days are over. It is the sinking into the pillow that pushes in the mask. No sinking - no more problems.

I'm like kteague. I've use a foam cpap pillow designed for cpap users. You can go to cpap.com and see the different types. The one I use is the Contour pillow, but they have changed the design. My cover's zipper is broke, so I got a hankering to get a new one. The cpap pillow has cut outs so when you sleep on your side, it doesn't interfere with your mask. I have often said it was the best cpap investment I've made. Wait! Did I say the hose hanger was the best investment...??? A lot of us do use the Buckwheat pillow as Ms kteague said, but it was to hard for me. I felt like Fred Flintstone lying on that thang. Anyway, I hope we've answered your question.

YES. I figured that out after a couple of days when only the bottom of the mask would gap a little and cause a leak. I did a little more poking around on the forums yesterday, and someone mentioned sleeping on the edge of the pillow, which I tried last night and NO LEAKS. I do have some flatter pillows that I don't like as much, so if that doesn't turn out to be a long term solution, well...I guess I'll have to be a flat, firm pillow girl *cue the waterworks*

At the very least, than you for making my nearly snort my coffee laughing! Now I'm picturing myself trying to sleep not only with my mask and hose, but with a bone in my hair and wearing fur pajamas (I live in California, so probably not the most temperature-appropriate).

I've got an "Klubbsporre" from Ikea. It's a moderate weight foam pillow that does the trick for me. It's firmer than the foam pillow with the cutouts from cpap.com. The cutouts never really worked for me and that pillow wasn't supportive enough for me. Otherwise the cpap.com pillow is a fine pillow.

The sheriff mentioned hose hangers in passing. Worth a look? I’m sold on them.

This buckwheat hull blended with foam pillow. https://pur-sleep.com/products/cpap-pillow.
My mask is a Phillips Dreamwear full face mask; hose connects at top of head. I also use a Pad A Cheek mask liner and a North American Wellness hose holder.
This combination works well for me.

I use a hose hanger as well. Game changer for me! :D

Whatever you do, first think about how it will travel. You don't want to get habituated to something that will not be available on trips. A good CPAP therapy is very important when traveling.
