Is LEAK affecting my Treatment?

Post by sidesleeper7 » Wed Sep 08, 2021 11:04 am

Been using the nasal mask below and cant get the Leaks under control, its a nasal mask and my leaks have been between 50-78 L/min per night - AHI last night registered 5 with a leak of 78, dont feel great today eyes kinda burning - my question is how much is this affecting my treatment? is the AHI #'s correct with leaks like this? what can i do to fix this? i do wear nasal strips so that may be why its leakin not sure! tx

Need to see the detailed report to be able to answer your questions reliably.
It all depends on how deep into large leak territory you went.

As to "how to fix it" question.....you have to figure out the cause of the big leaks.
It's either mask movement or mouth opening and the solutions for either are totally different.

Doesn't sound good.

Which model mask are you using? Do you have dry mouth?

Go to youtube and watch four or five videos on fitting and adjusting your mask model?

And all that being said, there are very many masks out there - go to Cpap.com and take a look at the variety. You can try some and return them if they're not suitable.

In the meantime, get a low form pillow and sleep on the ends of it. Those big fluffy ones cause leaks Do a test while you are awake by changing positions on the pillow while the mask and machine are on to see if you can identify where the leaks are coming from. Mark your mask straps and the slightly tighten the strap on the side where the leak is. Keep doing this each night making very small changes and marking the straps until you stop the leaks. Of course this is all assuming the straps are not too tight to begin with.

I second Thumper's advice. The low form pillow really helped me. If you are not having dry mouth, I wouldn't think the problem is mouth leak. A lot of folks seems to report leaks with F20, bridge of the nose sore, and leak into the eyes. And of course the mask needs to be of a shape that will work for the shape of your face. Maybe the F20 just won't work for you. If you want to stay with FFM, maybe the F30 would work for you. Or maybe a nasal or pillow mask. Your DME should be able to help you with this if they are competent and if you can visit their office.

Whether that's "horrible" or "meh, not too bad" depends on what your pressures are, since you're using a Philps machine.

Like Pugsy says, we need some data.

Pressure 9.5 max - and the leaks seem to come from around the top part side bridges of nose

Leaks of 50 aren't too bad for that pressure, 78 are pretty high.

Have you investigated mask liners to tame the leaks?

How old are your mask and fittings? I learned the hard way that as they stretch out it is easier to dislodge them during the night.
