Apap is hissing and pressure feels too low

Post by strawberryfields » Wed Aug 04, 2021 6:38 am

I noticed it two nights ago when going to bed, my apap made more noise than normal, I can best describe it as a hissing noise coming out of the machine. I also felt like not being able to breathe properly, the pressure felt much lower than it usually is, felt like I was suffocating.
I checked the mask seal, seems to be fine. Changed the hose, no difference. Changed water chamber, that didn't help either.
What could be the reason for this? Two nights of this and I am feeling really desperate and overly tired and exhausted.

you may not have noticed, but forum software doesn't tell us anymore what machine and mask each user has.

pls let us know so maybe someone will have a suggestion.

good luck!

Anytime anyone has a problem with a perceived difference in pressure from what they feel they should be getting or the setting or what they got in the past they need to verify the pressure actually being delivered at the mask by using a manometer.
Manometers can be store bought or a DIY homemade manometer.... (sorry don't have the homemade link handy but others do and I suspect will come along shortly and offer it).

Also it would be extremely useful for OP to tell us exactly what brand and model machine is being used along with maybe run hours on the machine.

For long term members here....you may have filled out the equipment profile in the past but it is no longer showing up (broken link that hasn't been fixed in like forever)....so don't assume we know what you are using since that profile is now absent.

Put your equipment in your signature line like I have mine. That is working (at least for now).

Now assuming AirSense/AirCurve model.....
As for hissing...have no idea but if water chamber connection is not the issue or hose or mask...the only thing at the machine level I can think of...and it's a very remote long shot...the air outlet thing might be messed up or seal broken somehow.
This part...which I hear is easily changed.

Oh I must have missed this! Thank you.

Thank you Pugsy!
I will look into getting a manometer.
I am using the Airsense 10 for Her machine from Resmed, and it has been in usage for 7457 hours.
I will put my machine and mask in the signature, thanks!

Okay, I was wondering about the outlet part as well, I had no idea it was possble to change it out by myself.

What is the machine leak level? You can view this number on the machine display or in OSCAR. Yes, it is also a good idea to check the pressure with a manometer. Your local DME can do this for you, or you can buy your own manometer.

The max leak rate is shown to be 4.80.

So something strange happened. The last 2 nights I have been using my backup machine, which is the regular Airsense 10. The machine is quite new, I haven't used it a lot so far (because I can't sleep as well with it as with the For Her model). Anyways, the first night was normal and the second night the same thing happened as with the For Her machine: hissing sound and pressure feels way too low/too weak.
I am really confused. I think the sound mainly comes from the water chamber, but I can't see anything wrong there.

There could be a 'slit' in your hose somewhere causing the noise - you should look for it (slowly run water through) and duct tape a cut if you find one.

Update: I tried something that I didn't think would work but somehow the pressure seems more normal now?
I switched the power cord. I tried the Apap two times with power cord 1, and two times with power cord 2, and the pressure problem seems to only occur with power cord 1. I hope this really is the solution because I am desperate for some more normal sleep again.

Unfortunately I was wrong :( I think I just really wanted it to work.
I also checked the tube, there don't seem to be any holes in there.
If I don't figure it out by Monday, I'm gonna call remsed and send both machines to repair.

Which country? In the US, warranty issues are handled by the equipment suppliers, not machine manufacturers. Nothing to get hung about.
