BTW, nice modern Chuckie avatar. Should I assume you are are another BSD guy?
Chuckie? That's Beastie, though he doesn't have a name, as defined by his creator. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BSD_Daemon

I've dabbled in BSD. I spend most of my time in other unixes, but mainly have just really liked the little devil, ever since I saw him on a T shirt (from a usenix con) I think it was the shoes.

Very cool. I'm one of the early BSD gang from the late 70's and while working on 4.2BSD we asked Kirk McKusick to have them add Chuck Taylor's to the image, hence the nickname "Chuckie". Kirk liked the idea and had the artists add them. Never knew the artist guys.

Back to the original thread...

I decided to give it a try for a few nights as an experiment with no chinstrap or other apparatus, just using the P10 nasal pillows. The first night I had a few large leaks to about 10% of time used, but last night was 0.3% of time used. I know 3 nights does not make a trend, but it is interesting how it played out.

One thing I did was "attempt" to be completely relaxed when going to sleep as I did notice when using pillows before that when I woke up even after a rough night with them I was breathing fine. This told me that I can use the pillows, but I needed to understand why it was fine in the later part of sleep and as I awoke. What I realized is I was totally relaxed.

This is the feeling I am trying to replicate and see how/if it impacts my ability to use the P10. For those who struggle with nasal pillows it is something to consider spending some time analyzing how we feel with them. I know that I was tensing up and getting frustrated, which may be a big contributor to the overall experience. I'll continue the experiment for a few weeks and see how it goes.

this makes great sense, grasshopper. if one can't relax, how can one sleep.

keep us in the loop, please.

and continued good luck!

Quick check in a week later…

No consistency with the chin strap experiment. Still about 5%-10% large leaks with it not waking me up other than on rare occasion for a few seconds, just long enough to shut my yap and fall asleep again. AHI remains < 1 regardless.

Ordered a cervical collar copying Zonker. Going to give that a try for a week and report back.

Not quite a week but to close out the thread...

For me a chin strap just did not do the trick unless I winched it down as tight as Hannibal Lechter's mask. I tested 4 different kinds of chin straps with no real success so have added them to the unused technology pile in my attic.

After 4 days of testing two cervical collars (thanks Zonker for the advice) with no other aids to stop mouth leaks, the Coreline and Caldera releaf have worked very well. While using one of the collars my AHI remains < 1 and large leaks are < 1% with no being woken-up by the air escaping. I'll continue using a collar and that will hopefully solve my large leak issues at least for now.

Thanks everyone for the advice!
