Funny how so many records have been conveniently "lost" . . .
This mess has gone on for way too long.
It is obvious that Philips has always cut corners.
But they finally got "caught."
The way they chose to cut their losses turned into a disaster;
rivaling the original issue; and acerbating the existing covid-related supply problems.
Their choices have contributed to a world-wide emergency.
So when will they be held responsible?
Somebody got to PAY!!!!

It's Over! Finally!

Post by remstarcpap » Tue Feb 14, 2023 1:33 pm

I can hardly believe it, but FedEx showed up yesterday and dropped off two Dreamstation 2's to replace my System One 50 and 60 cpaps! it took forever, and I had to jump through many hoops, but for me the recall is over. They seem like very nice machines and certainly are smaller than the machines that they replaced. So they may make good travel machines. Of course their website said I wouldn't get them until March 22, which is par for the course since nothing has really been correct. But at least now I don't need to think about this anymore.

Glad I requested new DS1 replacement for my DS1 machines as the DS2 was definitely redesigned to take cost out of manufacturing with almost all the operations via a touch screen instead of the easier to use knob and buttons on the DS1 (especially in the dark at night).

How does one make this request? After watching a couple videos, I agree with the DS1 choice.

So you're saying Medicare themselves don't require it?
That's right.

I have a Medicare Advantage plan. They are the ones who require a new sleep study.
Who told you this?
Aetna. They said mine was too old.
Did you get that dad-blamed insurance company straightened out?

Phillips wants me to provide a copy of my prescription prior to shipping the replacement CPAP machine.

Phillips should get a copy of that prescription from my DME - CPAP.com

The only way I can get a prescription is to pay $$$ for a visit to my doctor.

Several messages left on my voicemail from a person at Phillps who can not speak english.

1. Why don't you ask cpap.com to email you a copy?

2. How did cpap.com get the copy? Did you send it to them?

3. Why do you think you need to pay for a doctor visit to get a copy? Just call their records person and ask them to send you a copy. It's your right to have a copy of any and all of your medical records.

I made the request via two channels. The first was the recall related help line Philips set up and the second was by calling the regular Philips corporate customer service organization. The request was for both new, not refurbished, DS1 replacements as both my DS1 machines were new and under warranty. Also stated I would not accept DS2s as a replacement based on the different features. Made these calls back in the early summer of 2021 shortly after I registered my machines.

As an FYI I also finally was able to test the replacement DS2 sent for my older (from 2015) System One CPAP roughly three weeks ago. Did not make the DS1 request here as this was an old unit basic CPAP unit reserved for on-battery camping use only. Just tested out the DS2 over the past couple nights to confirm that it is working as it should. While the DS2 is more compact than the DS1s I definitely prefer the DS1s as follows:

1) The DS2 has an overall cheaper construction look and feel. As others have noted the design includes a focus on engineering manufacturing costs out of the device.
2) Almost all the functionality on the DS2 is via a microscopic touch-screen that is much harder to read than the DS1 screen
3) No ability to pre-heat the water in the humidifier in the DS2
4) Built in Cellular on the DS2 can not be disabled other than by going into airplane mode that only lasts for a few days - I've no desire or need to have my data uploaded to Philips
5) Built-in humidifier cannot be detached on the DS2
6)As others have reported it's more difficult to refill the humidifier water chamber - basically the equivalent of fully detaching the humidifier on the DS1. Also when full water easily spills out of the water chamber

Note after two nights of use the DS2 does work well and is an effective replacement for an older System One machine. Also it's not a bad deal to have received a full auto-pap with humidifier as a replacement for an old basic CPAP machine. In my case I'll see if I can rearrange my luggage to take the DS2 for travel in place of my Apex basic CPAP so I can have auto-pap even when on the road.

Overall the DS2 appears to have been engineered more as a consumer electronic versus as a resilient medical device including the shift of many features from mechanical controls to a touch screen. Have seen this pattern in automotive dashboards, for example, with a resulting consumer backlash (per Consumer Reports) that forced redesign so that key controls, such as climate system controls and entertainment/radio on-off switches were moved back to physical buttons or knobs that could be accessed just by feel when driving on the road. The same is the case for a CPAP were it's easier to access a physical ramp control by feel versus having to sit up and look at a touch screen when trying to fall asleep at night.

Overall glad to finally be done with what was a 20 month Philips CPAP recall process.

It came!
I was out of town at the time, and my son hid the package in plain site among some packages containing gardening stuff for my wife. I finally noticed it yesterday.

Too late to request a DS1, I received a DS2.

I agree with some of the negatives listed, but they are tolerable for a backup device.
The first night went fine. Like the System One it replaces, breathing seems smoother than with the Resmed.

I can now positively affirm that Philips did in fact replace a PAP over 5 years old (12 actually) and out of warranty.

Sooooo, I sucked it up and called Philips again. Actually, the number I called turned out to be a contractor PR has hired to take our irate calls.

I registered two System One machines last September, my husband's and my own. No clue from PR on when we'll get our replacements, but have received a couple pointless emails, ["...we caught up with Dr. Jan Kimpen, Senior Medical Advisor, to explore some of the most common questions we’re hearing from patients on topics ranging from device safety to the latest testing and research results..." Yes, that's me stabbing myself in the eye with a pencil.]

Today's news:

My replacement is being sent to a DME. Uh, I don't HAVE a DME. Well, Philips assigned me one. So who is it? They don't have that information. When will it be sent? They don't have any idea.

For my husband's machine, Philips has determined the machine is more than five years old. We "should not be using machines that are five+ years old." PR is now demanding we contact hub's doctor and have him send hub's prescription to PR. So where does his replacement stand? You just put it on hold all this time? Well, yeah. How was my husband supposed to know he had to contact his dr for a prescription? After registering 18 flippin' months ago when no such request was made. Dunno. He could go to the portal. Okay, please pass me along to a supervisor. I am a supervisor.

So, next call is to the FDA. I'd like to know what you guys are doing about PR not replacing cpap machines. Her: Well, we meet with them every month. Me: And? Her: Well, the same topics are pretty much brought up at every meeting. Me: I gotta tell you, from reading the FDA press releases on this, and dealing with PR on this, it looks like they're just blowing you off. Her: well...yeah.

She's under the impression Philips has replaced nearly all the machines.

He could go to the portal
This is what worked for me. Emails stopped coming, and phone calls did little. This thread taught me I should use the portal. First to reject the $50 payout, then that a prescription was required to be faxed, then that doctor contact was required. Finally the offer of an APAP with default settings which I accepted even though my prescription had been faxed and they had contacted my doctor. I suggest trying what others have found to work.

I took my System One apart yesterday to check the foam before sending it back. It looked pristine. FedEx has it now, and this bit is now over for me. Thanks to all for contributing and helping the process.

For the past few months, I have been calling P.R. every couple of weeks to check on status for my system one replacements. One person over a month ago told me he submitted for one of the devices to be replaced/shipped, and the past four calls come up with - we have your prescriptions and the prescription verification team has to review it before we can ship your replacements . . . and commented we receive several prescriptions per day and it takes time to verify each one, so please be patient . . .

Reading the posts about others getting their system one replacements, gives me hope . . . hope that at some point, I will receive mine :)

Dreamer,
Suggest going into the portal and choosing the APAP without a prescription. You can always enter the settings yourself. (Hold the button while swiping down over the screen on a DS2). Nothing to verify.

It sounds very much like Philips wants to SELL your hubby a machine.
I respectfully urge you to just get him a Resmed.
