Replacement for Mirage DoubleGel Mask

Post by nick3092 » Tue Apr 06, 2021 7:50 am

I recently discovered ResMed discontinued the DoubleGel cushion (large) that I used with my Mirage Activa LT frame. I had been using that for at least the last 10-11 years and was the perfect mask. I never had any leakage (my app shows 0L/min every night) and the comfort and fit were perfect.

Now I'm struggling to find something to replace it. Hoping to get some ideas or feedback. I'm a fairly active/restless sleeper. Mainly on my back, but occasionally on my side. Also a fairly light sleeper, and get woken up easily by the slightest things.

When I replaced my machine a few years ago, my DME gave me a medium AirFit N20. I used it for about a week, but didn't like it. I could never get used to the way the head gear fits compared to the Mirage. And maybe I need a large instead, as it felt like my nose would frequently rub against the inside of the mask when I moved around. Not to mention, that stubby hose they put on the front seems thin and cheaply made, like it would tear easily and need to be replaced often. So after a week I went back to my Mirage and DoubleGel. I still have it, and could give it another try again.

I recently got the Philips Comfort Gel (large), as the frame and head gear seemed to mimic my mirage. Plus it had a gel cushion. After 4 nights with that, I'm ready to smash it and trash it. The gel cushion is a fraction of the mirage cushion and very uncomfortable. And the double piece cushion design is not that great. I'm getting leakage (my app is showing maybe 1.2L/min a night - I know that's not much, but when you know 0 is possible, I don't like seeing it). And the more I tighten up the headgear to fix the leaks, the less comfortable the already uncomfortable mask feels. Additionally the adjustment for the top of the frame feels cheap and seems like it will break easily. Not to mention the "quick release" (and I use that term loosely) is garbage. And worst of all, it's giving me rain out. Despite all the parameters being the same with my mirage (which never gave me rainout using the heated hose, fleece hose cover and the same temp/humidity settings).

So instead of playing mask roulette any further, I'm hoping that someone else similar to me that also used the Mirage/DoubleGel and has found something else that works as well they can suggest.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Yup. Everywhere I look the large is unavailable (and has been for a few months), with a couple places flagging it as discontinued.

I saw at one site where it was discontinued Sept 2020. Doesn't surprise me that one size seems to sell out totally. It's always been that some sizes seem to be more popular than others. It's that way with any mask cushion or even nasal pillow.
In your case...the large probably was the biggest seller.

Masks get discontinued when they are low sellers and new masks continually evolve. It's the nature of masks which I know doesn't mean squat to you when you thought you found your forever mask.

I am not much help in offering ideas to try as a replacement since I don't use that sort of mask and never have.

What you might do if cpap.com has a copy of your RX (or you can get them a copy) is buy a mask and try it and if you don't like it or it doesn't work out you can return it for a refund (30 days I think) and then try something else and not have to keep flushing money down the toilet. cpap.com has free return insurance now with all their masks.

I have two of those in medium unopened that you can have. Sorry they are medium and not large but if you can use them, send a pm and I will mail them to you. I use a different mask now.

Hello Jannicatt,
I have the same issue and was happy to find this post. Do you still have that medium? I use medium and would be happy to buy it from you - even both, if you have them. Thank you for your reply. You can directly contact me at gabor.salamon@icloud.com .

Thanks.
