I tape my mouth shut every night. My husband thinks the xpap puts me into a coma because I no longer wake up every few hours! I could probably sleep thru a bomb going off. I know I can sleep thru oak floors being installed! I had the power go out one night, I woke at some point, put my hose on my polaris machine(battery operated), and went right back to sleep. So I'm pretty sure you won't have a problem.

I have to mouth tape ever night that I use a nasal mask or else I get mouth leaks.

I do have to say I think there is some risk in it. During Dec-Jan, until I switched to an oral mask, as I slept my nasal passages would slowly swell closed. I would often wake up feeling like I was suffocating and pull off the tape to get a breath. Because the swelling would happen slowly my body didn't seem to respond in the same way that it would if you just blocked off the passages quickly. I would really feel like crap when I woke up. When I was home for Christmas my parents even took me to emergency because I was so white from that happening. It was quite scary.

While I think its generally ok be careful if your having congestion.

I've been using tape (and occasionally a DIY mouthguard just for a change) for about three years.

ask yourself, when was the last time you puked in your sleep?
It's happened a few times in my life. Any one of those times with my mouth taped would've killed me. Plus, it makes me feel very claustorphobic.

I've tried mouth taping, but for me, I'm not down with it.

I just started using CPAP 3 days ago. I bought a full face mask and nasal pillows. I used the full face mask for three night's, had 33 apnea incidents the first night and 29 the second night with the full face mask. I started with the full face mask because as soon as I fall asleep my mouth relaxes and opens.
Last night I taped my mouth vertically with one piece of surgical tape and used the nasal pillows. Wala! That was the trick for me. I went from multiple episodes the first 3 nights to 1 episode the 4th night with the nasal pillows and mouth tape.
It does take some getting used to but your body will adjust after 10 or 15 minutes. Tape stayed on all night long.....
Actually looking forward to how I do tonight!

I have never been able to get either of my FF masks to fit without leaks. Give it a try without going to sleep some time if that will make you feel less anxious about the whole idea. I once told a sleep doc about taping and he refused to take me seriously. Good luck.
Old thread I know,

I have to tell you that I've had such a good laugh with your post. Just what I needed. Thanks, Nana

As for suffocating if the power went off or the machine shut off, think about what's going on when you're using the mask with the machine running -- you inhale AND you exhale. There are vents on the mask. If the machine didn't allow you to exhale you'd just inflate. haha. Either that or the continuous air pressure would travel through your digestive track and create a continuous release of air down below. If you thought your spouse hated your snoring I think they'd like the parachute effect with the bedsheets even less. (Sorry, that's gross!)

Seriously, though, it's fine. It's simple enough to test it for yourself: put on the mask with the machine off and try a relaxed steady breathing through your nose.
Again, Old post
But I'm trying it tonight.

I have taped a few times, but since I have a little GERD, decided it was a less than stellar idea.

Well, I'll tell you one thing,
Oh I also used a Kroger brand breathe right strip.
Taped my mouth,
I'll tell you one thing, No Dry Mouth.
Now, I did not sleep straight through, and I did have stressful dreams,
But That's my fault I'm pretty sure.
Didn't really eat right yesterday, (That's lots O days, )
So ~ 11:15 I got up and ate 1 1/2 peanut butter sandwich.
Pretty sure that was my problem.
But I got up about 5:30 and stayed up.
Can't say I feel great, But tonight is another night.
NO EATING LATE!

It may not be safe, although I think it is relatively safe. I used to have gerd and even when my stomach content would backflow up into my mouth there always would have been time to remove the tape. Now, I have fixed the GERD and last night taped and used a lose c-collar for the first time, or at least the first time for the entire night. The result was stellar, one event for 7 hours sleep. Best ever. Somehow I still managed to get a brief leak, but I will work on that.
