Suspecting long term Nasal Pillow use alters nose shape?

Post by Apneak » Tue Feb 16, 2021 1:12 pm

Hi, has anyone noticed their nose changing shape (getting wider/ more boxy) that they believe is from nasal pillow use? I've previously suspected it but thought it was crazy. But now I'm quite sure, lol. And I'm in my early thirties, so I don't believe this is normal aging. And yes, i'm vain enough to notice and care. It makes sense...If gravity can change your shape over time, which is widely accepted, then surely the force of airpressure 6-8 hrs a day in the same spot, plus any additional 'squishing' of nose from mask, will have some affect on the nose shape over time. Previously used P10, now on P30i.

Just a potential warning for people considering nasal pillows...I'm not certain but like 80% sure. Luckily Philips has a new "dreamwhisp" mask that is a top of head connection like the p30i, and a full nasal mask, which looks promising.

Been using nasal pillow mask exclusively since May 2009. My nose/nostrils still look exactly like they did when I started. Same size, same physical appearance.

If yours have changed then you haven't been either using the correct size or the correct fitting.

Gramps has been using nasal pillows for over 20 years and hasn't noticed any changes.

Add my name to the list of people who have been using Nasal Pillows and everything's still good.

You are making no sense.

Judging by your past threads/posts you are a pathological whiner.

Nasal pillows are meant to sit lightly against the nose, only the very tip of the cone passes the outer edge of the nares, and they shouldn't be so tight that they push up your nose so you end up with a "pig nose". So how in the world can they alter your nose shape????? Are you shoving the nasal pillow in your nose???

Take a look at yourself with nasal pillows on at 10 cm of pressure, and then I think you'll understand how one may suspect it could change nose over time. constant pressure / force on a body part can change it's shape. it takes years, but it can happen

No..it can't unless improperly fitted or incorrect size is used. Biggest error made....people use way too much tension and cram those suckers into the nostrils and/or pull the end of the nose up. If you look in the mirror and the first thought through your head is "piggy nose" then you have it way too tight and/or wrong size nasal pillow.

And pressures used has absolutely nothing to do it.

Believe what you want and if you really think that and don't want to believe it or change anything...then use a different kind of mask. Pretty simple.

I have been on cpap coming on 12 years now. Always used nasal pillow mask of some sort...and spent a lot of time at pressures up around 16....and my nostrils haven't changed one bit...not even a teeny tiny change.

I did find this article on a small study which claims,
Sleep Apnea Mask May Cause Subtle Facial Changes
Study found prolonged use led to slight shifts in jaw, position of teeth

I started 11 years ago.
My pillow size has always been small.
Never rub Miracle Gro on your nose.
It never goes well.
Regardless of where you think it might help . . .
