Welcome to the forum!!!!

Thanks for welcoming me. 8)
Sure not a problem. I am pretty new here too. Diagnosed 2 years ago and using CPAP for about 3 months. Yes, I failed my first CPAP therapy. 😕. Symptoms got worse over these two years and decided to try again. This time with better results, so far. Lol. The people here have helped tremendously with all the challenges of CPAP therapy. Too bad I didn’t find this forum 2 years ago. 😎😎😎

I am hoping to take to cpap therapy like I have with type 1 diabetes. Wearing an insulin pump 24/7 has been an experience and adventure. If it is what we need to live longer for our families then that’s what we must do. I never really thought about sleep apnea until my family started telling me the things I was doing when sleeping. It became more than just snoring.

Update: Probably not much to say except some results did come back from my At Home study and of course apnea did show up. I am now being referred to a sleep doctor. The nurse said I might have to do another in office overnight sleep study. I am going to avoid this at all costs because of COVID and my wife’s recent cancer diagnosis. We will be dealing with it most of this month with surgery and appointments. I guess they couldn’t tell what my settings would need to be for cpap machine. I say write me a script and I will download Oscar results. Gotta be knowledgeable people here than the local yocals. :D

that's why they "need" the second, titrating, study.

but YOU don't need it as you've correctly pointed out. get the results from a couple of nights from oscar, post them here and voila!

btw, any doctor can write that scrip.

a dentist can write it, if they so choose.

I guess the options given by my endocrinologist’s nurse was the titration study or over night sleep study. I was a bit confused at that point. She told me that the Dr that read my study might give me the option of starting therapy now. Also I was in it for the insulin vial samples mostly. Mostly. :D

Is there anything I should say in a certain way to sleep doctor to get him to prescribe a CPAP? I will hear him out about my sleep apnea and if he thinks it is a certain kind.

mind you, i haven't done this myself. i wish i'd known this could happen when i first started. but, alas, i didn't.

no this comes from people who have come into the forum and said they have done it. you just want to tell the doctor the truth. tell him you want a prescription for cpap and that you plan to go out of pocket for it. tell him to write the scrip for settings of a minimum of five and a maximum of twenty for the pressure. it won't matter what pressures he writes. after you get the machine, you can set it any way you choose, of course.

tell him what brand you'd like and the hose.

now, there is no reason for him to say sure and DO it. but there's nothing preventing him from writing it, either. if he doesn't want to, then it's time to find a new doctor who will.

again, it doesn't even have to be a sleep doctor. a gp can write it. or a dentist. the trick will be to find someone who will.

there's no magic words or phrases to be used to compel your sleep doctor to write the scrip. the only thing you can do is ask.

good luck!

eta: this https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... r-humidair is the machine you want.

you know, you can blow past all of this mess, if you want, and just buy a machine directly from forum member lsat. he's currently got one for sale and often has more. his current one is here-

Thank you for the lengthy response. I need all the help and suggestions I can get. I will take your response and put it toward my plan of attack. My endocrinologist nurse was the one that said further study might be needed but if I can talk to my endo I am sure we can work something out. She is one to actually listen to patients instead of telling them what they need.

the medical profession needs more of her sort, that's for sure!

I appreciate your gabby soul. It helps to make informative decisions. Noticed today on my patient portal that I was scheduled with a sleep doctor for March 17th. I was like, Really? So I took the proactive approach and spoke with a nice lady that got me in tomorrow morning. Hoping to get a script and get started.

Oh, well done -- appt tomorrow! As for any kind of overnight study, I think any doctor would be swayed by the consideration that you are trying to protect the health of your COVID-vulnerable spouse. You might mention that you know auto CPAP machines allow for effective titration at home.

During the appointment, be sure you get information about the breakdown of your AHI (obstructive apnea, central apnea, hypopnea). Also, in the U.S. you have a legal right to receive a copy of your sleep report, so do request one. It might be helpful when it comes time to fine-tune your settings.

I agree 100% with Zonker about the machine to request. Be firm about this. Explain that you appreciate its more nimble algorithm, its ability to provide true pressure support (aka "expiratory pressure relief"), and the fact that you can adjust the pressure settings by increments of just .2 -- all of that compared to Phillips Respironics Dreamstation, the main market competitor.

Good luck!

Thank you. Literally making a list of questions to take with me in morning. I am absolutely freaked that my wife might get exposed to the COVID. Not going to take any extra chances.

So far:
Ask for sleep report
Min 5 Max 20 pressures
What kind of apnea
Script wrote for APAP with heated humidifier Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset
Heated hose Resmed
Full face mask Resmed F30i
Mention our COVID exposure concerns to not do overnight sleep study

Sure this list will grow before the nights up.

one slight nitpick though it really makes a difference. that machine should be the "for her" model i linked. yes, i infer from your post that you are a man. but the "for her" offers more than one general setting that you may benefit from.

pay no attention to the "for her" part. it's not a screaming pink color. from what i hear, the only difference on the outside is it has a pattern of leaves on it. and in the dark, who's gonna see that?

My wife and kids will see it during the day. Then they will tell their friends and my family. Then it will end up on several social media sites. Then what do I do? Cover the leaves with camp duct tape?
