I had a herniation of the 3 cervical and a tapering dose of Prednisone was the only thing that got it under control. I slept very little for 3+ weeks until the course of treatment and then it really was like a magic bullet. A co-worker had a course of Prednisone treatment for another problem and had a blood sugar spike of over 300+ and moderately elevated sugars ever since. One person was on it long term for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and it accelerated bone loss to a fantastic rate so like so many others said - good/bad, Jekyll/Hyde. I am grateful for what it did for me and have used once since to treat a flare-up of the herniation but got off very quickly. It should be treated like a loaded gun - very, very carefully with lots of monitoring and sort of as a last resort treatment.

Deviated septum alone wouldn't call for steroids-so nasal membranes must have looked inflamed or swollen. In that case the symptoms would most likely be nasal stuffiness, runny nose etc. Steroids would decrease the inflammation/swelling but won't move a deviated septum-that takes a hammer and chisel-sterile-but still a hammer & chisel.

I just finished a round of prednisone about two weeks ago. It was an attempt to get my nasal swelling under control. I was expecting it to do wondered from what I was told. I was on it a week and while I did see some improvement it was not immediate and not dramatic. For me I found it harder to sleep while taking it. My doctor wants me to try another round but I am hesitant since more than a week requires tapering to get off it.

I have been on a number of prednisone treatements to raise my platelet counts prior to having a splenectomy. I could never really sleep on it, was wired, and my wife said that I got "downright mean". It certainly worked on raising platelets, but the effects on my personality and being wired all the time, for me, were not good. However, I was on them more long term instead of just a one week course. I have been on the couple day course for bad poison ivy without problems.

I took prednisone for 6 months and gained about 50 pounds - it can be great med if taken short term, but it is an evil med if taken long term.

Corticosteroid nasal sprays are a whole 'nother matter; they don't have the systemic problems and they are very effective.
