How?
The fan brings room air through a filter then the machine and over a humidifier chamber (if using one) along the hose into the mask to your nose/mouth. Then out the vent holes in the mask.
All under pressure (cm).
Possibly cleaner than the room air on its own.

You totally gloss over (or don't comprehend) the fact that the POINT of the article is that extreme cleaning methods *ARE NOT NECESSARY*. .....WHOOOSH

Shortly after I retired from the military, I went through a period of recurring sinus infections. My doctor finally referred me to an allergy specialist. After several years of shot therapy, I no longer had severe allergy problems and the sinus infections became became few and far between. Now that I am using a bilevel machine, I have had even less of them.

And no persistent hysteria . . .
