OK I downloaded the Clinical Manual.
Now I'm trying to figure out mask sizing. I'm a small guy with a small head. LOL

One of the best masks to start with, especially if one is self managing without the benefit of a fitting, is the ResMed P10
- One of the cheapest masks available.
- Right now, $79 at our sponsor
- The starter pack comes with 3 sizes of Nasal Pillows
- Strap size fits a broad range of head sizes
- It's very minimal, and doesn't contribute to claustrophobia.
- Its a very popular mask

Nasal Masks are typically more expensive, more sensitive to leaks and comfort.
Full-face masks even more more expensive, and more sensitive to leaks and comfort as well.

MattL, I like your motivation and I hope that you will have the expected success. The P10 suggested by Dog Slobber is the perfect choice to start especially as you are a side sleeper. As you begin, one of the most common problems among cpap users is leaks through the mouth. It harms treatment, causes dry mouth, nasal congestion, fatigue because the treatment becomes ineffective, etc ... For me the only effective solution is the mouth taping. By searching on the forum, you will find other solutions like cervical collar, mouth piece, etc ... Good luck

Thank you. I'm motivated because I haven't had more than 4-5 hours of sleep per night in months and i am becoming dysfunctional. Hence my thread title.

Unfortunately I don't have a prescription.

Consider second hand.
A fair amount of people sell masks on buy/sell sites, often unused or unopened.

Another thing you can do without a prescription (Rx) is buy a mask in parts. I often buy replacement parts for my mask on Amazon or eBay. You don't need a Rx to do that.
You can go to an online CPAP shop (like our host, for example) and learn about the parts available for masks.
I usually don't need an entire new mask when replacing parts. I might need the nasal pillows or "face" straps before I need new headgear. The short hose that goes from my mask to the long hose I've been using for five years. This is a way to save $$$.

Sorry Matt, but you show an ESCAPE on the very last picture. If you don't have it in your own hands yet, don't buy it.
Good luck

I use the Comfort Gel nasal mask. It get a 100% seal on most nights, and high nineties once in a while.
The caveat is that this is a good fit for my face, not necessarily yours.
However, I think that you might want to try on the rests on the forehead (like mine). That might be a better fit.

It's not even an Escape Auto which at least has a smidgen of data available..
It is NOT an AutoSet and it doesn't even offer a smidgen of data to help you evaluate any results.
It's a bare bones basic no data brick fixed cpap only machine.
You don't want this model machine for DIYing things unless you are prepared to go just on how you feel without any data to help you out.
I don't advise it for DIYing and self diagnosis or self treatment at all.

Thanks again.
I paid via Paypal and with my credit card. They have not shipped it yet. I'm trying to cancel the order today.
Here is the title of the listing -
ResMed S9 AutoSet & H5I heated Humidifier with Carry Bag and SD Card Includes: Power Adapter

Agreed. I absolutely need data.
The risks of buying used online. I have screenshots so I can do a Paypal dispute if they don't refund me. If that doesn't work I used a credit card through Paypal so I have back up.
Pain in the butt!!

On a somewhat related note, when buying used, always ask for and then verify the run hours.
- I had one guy try to sell me a used AirCurve 10 VAuto, he claimed was "2 years old, and should be around 1000 hours". When I instructed him how to get the hours he then admitted is had 10927.
At 8 hours a night, that's almost 4 years.
A lot of people don't know the devices track hours, so you need to tell them how to get find it.
At that point the price changed from $400 (CDN) to $150. But, I could not trust hm any more.

Meanwhile I will look for another one. Will it say Autoset on the top of the unit?
