The big swings in the PS causing the pressures to go up so high is the machine breathing for you when you don't breathe on your own.
You can limit the big spikes by limiting max PS but then you are going to have times where you don't breathe on your own...centrals...and those can also cause wake ups. Limiting the max PS could mean not adequately taking care of the central apnea stuff.
Damned if you do and damned if you don't IF (big if) it is the pressure swings that are disturbing things.
It is also possible that it is the central apnea that is disturbing things and you see the arousal from the apnea and not necessarily from the pressure changes.
