Oh dear, I voted assuming the poll was to guess the average age of sleep apnea patients. Is there a way to change the wording... to like, what's our average age... how old are you??? Or something....

I'm 28. And I suspect I've had sleep apnea since I was a child. A good friend of mine used to work at a sleep lab where they did research on children with sleep apnea. I would imagine it goes underdiagnosed and treated.

I wish someone had figure it out for me back then. My sleeping habits and exhaustion was also chalked up to me just being a lazy teenager. Meanwhile, I'm actually severely sleep deprived. Talk about making teenage mood swings at an all time high! Sheesh.

I'm wary of any statistics.

There are many factors determining life expectancy, CPAP should definitely help extend life given medical warnings about OSA being hard on the heart.
OSA in general would be expected to be more common with age, as tissues sag etc.
But I urge caution with statistics, it is very difficult to control for enough factors to make a study meaningful.

He also says most apnea patients are over 40 years old..... Is this really true? So, let's take a poll and see as for our forum, what is the average age of apnea patients?
There probably is a correlation between age and apnea, but it doesn't mean that a child or teenager can't have it.

Diagnosed at 27.. Am now 43.
My daughter who is 18 was diagnosed with it at 16.. I'm positive my 25 year old son has it to. But he refuses to get tested. Since it doesn't *Suposedly* affect him. lol
yea he has to take 3-4 monster drinks with him for a 3 hour drive home.. And eats painkillers every other morning for the headaches.
My brother & sister in law have it and they are both in their 60's.

I am 22 with UARS. I think I had this all my life.

I think that untreated OSA/UARS has terrible impact on whole body and overall health. It is because of two things:

1) OSA cause apneas - lack of oxygen, harmful especially to heart, brain, but I think that to other body cells too
2) OSA and UARS causes multiple arousals (RERA's) - it's like an alarm clock waking you up for 10-50 times an hour, so how can we feel good?
3) Lack of deep phases of sleep means lack of proper regeneration of cells, it means bigger risk of heart disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases etc

In my case eg. UARS caused i.a. vasomotor rhinitiss, by deregulating my autonomic nervous system (have I mentioned that reason 2 puts us in the constant state of fight or flight stress response?) and adrenal fatigue, because in this stress reaction body produces (in adrenals) more cortisol all the time, then someday adrenals get exhausted and can't produce it more and this is very neccessary hormone and so on.

Since this won't get locked and has now jumped to the top... I'd like to say that I'm 118 years of age and still kicking.

Another worthless Poll from the wayback machine.

How could anything related to this poll, help your treatment of sleep apnea, except waste your time and everyone elses.
