@DKDonin, I know this is an old thread, but did you ever get a satisfactory answer to your question? I live overseas so cannot replace parts easily. Knowing whether I am risking a lung infection is important. (For those suggesting is is hard water 'scale', note that it is a greasy substance that moves if you squeeze or rub the sides of the mask frame. So, it is is mineral deposits it is mixing with something else.)

I'm not sure I ever got a definitive answer. I'm replacing mask parts per the Medicare schedule now and that seems to help, Sorry that I can not be more helpful to you.
