Check it out. If you want to try the product, go right ahead, but please read my reasoning first. Fully informed is a good thing!
Guest (whoever you are), I elected to ignore your rebuttal and let it stand on its own merits. Now that you raise it again I'll probably reconsider that initial response.
I don't understand why you assert that people are exposed to more air on xPAP than without it. That's simply false. To be sure, the air is pressurized but the total number of breaths a person takes in a night, and the total volume of air that enters and exits the lungs during any given night, would be the same with or without xPAP (apnea events aside). Virtually all of the aromatic goes out of the machine with the other jetwash. Using these products is not a whole lot different than placing a drop of lavender oil on your pillow at night without an xPAP. Think about it.
As for the safety of the aromatics at issue, I defer to the Food and Drug Administration. All of the oils used in these products are found on the list of essential oils the FDA considers are "generally recognized as safe" for human consumption. You can eat these oils. You can breathe them. There are hundreds of other essential oils that are not on the FDA list; I do not use any of these.
By training and vocation I am an environmental attorney and am well aware of the dangers and problems associated with human exposures to lead, radon, radium, asbestos (my step sister died of lung cancer at 29), radiation, benzene, toluene, arsenic, etc. I find it confusing that you would lump lavender essential oil in with such substances that are known to have negative health effects in humans.
If you believe that essential oils of lavender, orange, lime, clove, basil, marjoram, etc. have the potential to harm people, please address your comments to the FDA. If you supplied some additional information and support for your position perhaps they would reconsider their determination of human safety.
other oils with Pur-Sleep?

I stumbled on the Pur-Sleep on eBay and was thrilled; hadn't visited this forum for a few months or more so when I did, I was happy to see these discussions and to learn it was a forum member who came up with it!
I just received my starter kit last week and I'm very pleased with the product so far.
SleepGuy's most recent reply here may answer a question I had-- he discusses the essential oils and that the ones he listed are FDA approved in an important area. I was wondering how he'd determined which were safe (not that I was really worried, to be honest).
I'm a big fan of
Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab and have a lot of their oils so it was natural for me to consider trying some of them with the Pur-Sleep. In fact, before I discovered the Pur-Sleep I was pondering methods of getting my favorite aromas for use at night in conjunction with a CPAP!
I was wondering if Pur-Sleep should only be used with the oils made for use in it or if it's safe to experiment. I imagine SleepGuy can only guarantee or recommend his own oils, but it's only natural for scent geeks like me to want to try others (and guidelines on what would work would be nifty).
'Course it also occurs with me that some sort of partnership with someone like BPAL would be awesome, but then I'm a dreamer.

Hi Laurel-
I love nice scents as well, and make my own soap and good smelling stuff for my home. I can tell you a bit about the FDA. They maintain Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) listings. I am assuming that SleepGuy used their information to select his oils.
I took a quick look at the site you mentioned. As far as I could tell, they do not state just what they use in their fragrances. Personally, I would be very careful about introducing the unknown to my airway.
I hope this helps a bit.

In everything we do, all day every day, we introduce foreign substances into our lungs. Many of these things, such as exhaust from the car in the front of you we KNOW are bad for us. If someone told me that researchers said that the exhaust was not known to harm you, I would not be frantically rolling up the window or putting my a/c on inside air only when the car excellerated.
To me, this sounds pretty safe and when I get the extra $$$, I will be placing an order myself.
Smelling that plastic all night is horrible. And who knows what horrible things are lurking in that mask to harm us!!!!
God bless,
Louise

See my prior posts about why this too, over the long term, might eventually prove to be a Very Bad Idea:

"Nay-say" all you like. I find most people pay little attention to someone hiding behing a "guest" title any way. This is a great product. I was a massage therapist for 17 years and used essential oils in my work......from scenting the massage oils to adding it to oil lights. Nothing in my training ever indicated anything negative about essential oils. Never hurt me or anyone I worked on, so not only do I not mind using the Pur-sleep system on my own machine...........I don't hesitated to suggest it might be worth trying by others. If the scents from flowers and herbs are dangerous, you might contact the Floral Shop Society of America and let them know they need to stop selling such dangerous flora!

Just to jump in, on each bottle of fragrance, there is a complete list of what's in it. I wish that were on the website, or at least the primary ingrediant, but there's nothing hidden, evil, or sinister going on here.

?????????? Blarg!! LOL.....I was just looking to see if they listed any ingredients. Sometimes there is alcohol in fragrances even though they appear to be oils.

Yes I did; all of the oils I selected are listed on the GRAS list. All ingredients are listed on the bottle label. Generally the first oil is upwards of 80-95% of the total.
I will be adding a spectacular vanilla essential oil (oleoresin) I'm calling Creme, as well as a lovely tangerine-lime blend next week (called Fresh), bringing the total to 9 oils. I am certainly open to adding, dropping, or changing the lineup as feedback comes in over time. So feel free to voice your opinions. In fact I decided to change the oil ratios in Peace based on Blarg's feedback.
As for the other company, it looks like they're using primarily artificial fragrance oils but I may be mistaken. I'll spend some more time looking into that one.
Thanks for all of the support! Someone posted on Talkaboutsleep.com posted that she's no longer using her sleep meds! I call that a great success.

I personally can't wait until the new scents come out. actually the peppermint one is my favourite, it opens up the stuffy nose right away. I don't care for the one called paradise but I like the orange spice. I haven't tried the others yet but i will. pat

SleepGuy,
I'm enjoying your product!
I'm curious; why is clary sage used in all your formulas?

Sound? Do the oils make sounds? Is it like babbling brooks? Gentle surf? Spring rain on a tin roof? I bet that helps with sleep as much as the pleasant aroma!
