Wow reading this thread brings back so many memory's of back in the day computing, wow! I remember being in school using an Apple 2 playing Oregon Trail
Then I go venture off into google to look into equipment I had back in the day and I get this google image - with it being the "30th anniversary of the world wide web" it seems older to me but maybe it was not the www back then

How do you change your user name? I joined when cpaptalk had the wagons circled against spam attacks and rarely, if ever, accepted new logins. Now it seems out of context.
Dialup - that was fun for about 2 minutes. The 10th time you saw it take 20 seconds to paint the same screen through the 300 baud modem it got old.

I haven't tried it yet, still looking for a good name but apparently you send a message to a person named carolyn and she might possibly change it for me. (Crossing fingers ).

Anyone else here remember a time before the internet?
bbs systems, modems, 3.5 inch floppy drives.
I certainly do.
I remember the Internet, before it was the Internet, at least before it was commercialized and graphical.
We used to dial in with out 300/1200 BAUD modems, connect to a UNIX host. Instead of using the web and a browser we used
gopher and then
lynx. Instead of forums we used
usenet (NNTP protocol), instead of google, search was
Archie and
Veronica servers. The only thing that really survived from that era was IRC, Internet Relay Chat.
Prior to that, I (illegally) used a dialup service called DataPac, the Canadian equivalent of Tymenet. This was a commercial network service that was used for B2B data services, including education and Interac. Security back then was non-existent and many sites relied on their DataPac address being unknown for protection. Sites often had default or easily guessable credentials.
Using DataPac and its connection to other networks we were running the globe connecting to computers all over the world. Our motivation was to collect and trade host credentials and get access to "mainframes" and "minis" so we could learn "real" computer systems. Real computer systems being HP3000s, Vaxes and UNIX hosts.
DNS survived the non-commercial Internet. There are others.
Email
FTP
Kerberos
TCP-IP

How about "Rexless nights". It will work as long as you use the sleeping T-Rex as your avatar.

Here is a link to Carolyn's profile. I think you can message her from there.

I lurked for a few months before joining because I was looking
for an image that was upbeat.
I never posted as guest--at least it can not be proven.
(Now watch somebody show where I did)

The intent wasn't to create an all encompassing list of protocols that existed then vs now, but describe some general sentiment bout how much using the net has changed and how obsolete and impractical what was used daily now is.
Being pedantic, one could also say Gopher Servers have survived because there are few left up for historical reasons.
