Feeling like a sleepyhead! Inputs welcome.

Post by ScalingUp512 » Fri Feb 08, 2019 6:58 pm

I was diagnosed with mild-to-moderate (14.7 AHI) sleep apnea in December 2018 after an overnight sleep study and a separate overnight titration study. I have been using a AirSense™ 10 AutoSet™ CPAP Machine with Heated Humidifier and ResMed AirFit F20 mask since Christmas Eve 2018. I've literally had zero problems adjusting to sleeping with the mask and the machine. I'm using SleepyHead to analyze my data and tweak settings based on everything I have learned from being a passive participant on this forum. (A very sincere thank you to all...)

My AHI is typically now 0.3 to 0.4 - some nights a little better, some a little worse but 95+% of the time it's <0.5 and never above 1. There's a a few orders of magnitude difference, for the better, in how I am feeling now when I wake up. I've used the machine every night since I received it. I normally fall asleep in 15 minutes or less after going to bed with my APAP on. I'll strive for lower numbers but I think I'm on the right path.

Before I started therapy, no amount of sleep would ever result in me feeling well-rested when I woke up in the morning.

My question: I now feel like 8 hours of sleep is not enough. I feel so much better when I wake up after 9.5 to 10 hours of sleep a night vs 8 hours. After 8 hours of sleep, I have to force myself to wake up and get out of bed though it's not nearly as bad as pre-therapy days. Typically after a cup of coffee or two, I'm feeling okay. After 9.5 to 10 hours, though, I'm ready to jump out of bed and get my day started without any coffee required. Is this just my body telling me I need to catch up on sleep debt (if such a thing is real)?

Regardless of whether I sleep 8 hours or 9.5 hours, I no longer get tired in the middle of the afternoon, I have so much more energy, and my appetite is no longer voracious. So my "worst case scenario" is still pretty good!

Greatly appreciate any comments based on your experience.

welcome to the zoo! looks like you've got it knocked, cousin. wish *I* had gotten off to such a fantastic start.

yup, there really is a "sleep debt" in my humble opinion. pretty sure in some span of time (i have no idea how long that'll be) you should be plenty well rested with eight.

now, me? i'm a slug-a-bed who is retired. no alarm clocks for me. so i usually wake after anywhere from 8 to 9 1/2 hours, feeling well rested.

good luck!

Do you take any medications of any kind? If so, what?

Pugsy, you raise a very good point. I do take 40mg of Latuda in the evening with dinner. It makes me drowsy and definitely helps me get to sleep (even before I had my APAP machine). I never stopped to think that it might have a hang-over effect.... Thank you for the insightful question.
