If you don't have another machine, then keep that one in case your main one croaks off on a friday evening before a long weekend... (cuz that's when they like to fail).
You should, if at all possible, have a spare for everything.
How many times have you had to use an older machine as a backup?
This question is even more interesting to me in light of the recent prescription / OTC CPAP discussion / thread.
If replacing your CPAP in emergencies was very easy ... like something even a 24 hour drugstore or WalMart or Amazon Prime could do ... if it were more like running out of toilet paper or toothpaste ... or replacing your lost phone ~~~
~~~ some folks who now keep back up machines might not?
For me, even if it were available at Walmart, I would still have a backup at home. I keep my back up under my bed along with my other mask and tubing. It's already programmed so all I need to do is plug it in and go. I've only been at this 3.5 months, but I don't want a hassle in the middle of the night. Now that I can sleep, I WANT TO SLEEP.
Pugsy said that Goodwill destroys donated CPAP machines, and I don't know that other charities are much better at targeting the device to the need. I got my backup machine when I found one (similar to my main machine) on a shelf at a Salvation Army thrift store. It was labeled as a "personal humidifier", so they obviously had no idea what it was, and had a $35 price tag, so they obviously had no idea how expensive they are.
They let me plug it in to check it out. It worked and showed only 1100 hours on the clock, so, I snapped it up.
I have not had to use it yet.
I have no knowledge as to what GoodWill (or any of those places) does with cpap stuff.
I think someone else said they destroyed them but just in case someone thinks I said that...I think it was someone else.
