Count me as dubious on the disconnected hose/mask test. Tidal volume does correlate to lung size (driven more by height than weight). In addition, tidal volume is typically reduced (rather than increased) with obesity.

If you take a SCUBA regulator (in good working order, dust cap removed from the first stage, and not connected to a tank) and breath in, it is super hard to breathe. Attach it to a tank, and bingo, no problem at all! The difference is air pressure.

It is possible to over breathe a regulator -- as I am sure it is to over breathe a xpap. And hose size could play in (why many machines have a setting for hose information). My guess is that more pressure is the answer (unless the fan is small...like in a travel unit).

The question in this context is are you exceeding the ability of the machine to deliver air (which seem rather unlikely) -- and testing the hose/mask without pressure will not tell you anything there.

I would focus on a sleep study and mask fit...

BCman, looks like it is not worth it to try and get a performance hose. But the sleep study is still very important.

I made a promise not to mess with the machine until the next appointment.
You gave the doc a placebo, and it made him feel better.
That one really made me smile.

Not possible!

Mine is currently configured to not allow almost any user changes. I can set mask to full, nasal, or pillow but there is no option for hose type, length, or diameter.
Oh...definitely possible and needed when people change diameter hoses.
Go here and get the manual for your machine...in it you will find out to get to the setup menu area where changes can be made.

https://www.apneaboard.com/adjust-cpap- ... tup-manual

Bet you a cup of coffee that the issues you had with the hoses were because you used wrong diameter hose selection.

Selection is needed for any non heated hose..

Heated hoses the machine automatically senses the heated hose and already knows the diameter so no selection is needed...the machine will do it for you.

You should start your own thread as per the instructions
2...Start your own thread about your own specific issues/questions or problems...don't piggy back it onto someones else's thread because it gets confusing when we start offering different ideas to different people in the same thread.

My apologies BCman. I was thinking the same thing last night. We have drifted way off from your original post, and gotten a little bit snipish going back and forth over increasingly technical details that are probably not of interest to anyway one else. I will start a new topic and see if the off topic posts here can be moved with just a place holder or a snip that was still related to the op.

Not the first time a thread got derailed and won't be the last.
Comes with the territory here.
It can create confusion when trying to help someone though which is why we like to keep it to a minimum if at all possible.
