I will always unplug during an electrical storm! Lines outside our house were hit by lightening once...Blew out all the light bulbs, all the computers, melted the chargers for our phones, melted the mother bd to our alarm system, even blew out the controls to my stove.
I don't think you would get electrocuted but it would most certainly ruin the machine.

In many cases, there is something that can happen sometimes during storms called a power surge or even when lightning strikes at a specific spot can ruin the machine, just like it can ruin computers (yes, even with surge protectors, as I found out recently), cable TV, etc. In addition to unplugging the CPAP when storms come in, I also unplug the computer, cable TV box, TV, and microwave. Better safe than sorry.

Unplugging during a storm is to protect the machine not you. Electricity has to travel through something and plastic/rubber masks and hoses aren't any good for that.
Surge protectors are alright for the regular little spikes in the line. But lightning strikes are another story. Lightning packs a much more powerful punch. You don't want to be on the landline phone during a lightning storm either.
