Is AHI a reliable indicator of efficacy of therapy?

Post by champak2001 » Wed May 30, 2018 2:38 pm

I have noticed that my performance deteriorated in past when i stopped using APAP for few weeks. But lately I am noticing the problem even with 100% compliance and AHI of 2.6- to 3.2.
Is my respironics APAP giving correct AHI when I check every morning? Can there be any other reason that my therapy is less effective?

Depends on what you consider 100% , compliance is a useless number, set by INS companies to mark if they should support your health, and so they can keep making money off you.

What you need to know, your treatment must be correct for you, you must use it every time you might go to sleep, not just a few hours a night. You also need a machine that collects full data and a program to read it, then you can adjust your treatment to work better. Jim

Besides "What do you mean by performance?," how do you know? You said you stopped using it, so what kind of metric do you have for that period?

Personally, if my AHI were above 2 on a regular basis, it would adversely affect my well being. If you can get yours better without causing other problems, I encourage you to make that effort. Count and duration are major factors in our AHI. The person who has few events but they each last for a long time still has a problem needing addressed.

"Compliance" doesn't mean squat if your system isn't adjusted for your needs... it's like wearing the wrong pair of glasses.. you can wear 'em all day long and still not be able to see clearly.

And 2.6-3.2 is higher than I'd call 'good' for AHI... under 2 is where I figure we start to get to 'yeah, probably acceptable.'.
