Thanks for all your replies.

I suffer from pretty serious OCD so I go overboard with a lot of things. It's something I'm working on improving. I'm aware of how irrational my actions often are but the compulsion to do them remains hard to overcome.

You've all explained the logic of why I'm overreacting very clearly so I will resolve to just use baby shampoo and water.
Thanks for the explanation!

That complicates everything doesn’t it? I hope the solid info provided here will help you manage your ocd on this issue. I know it takes a lot more than just changing the irrational thinking. It’s good, though, that you are far enough along to recognize the obsessions aren’t necessarily the healthiest thoughts.

Anti-bacterial soap is not necessary. Plug your sink drain, squirt some dawn in there, and make some hot and soapy water.

I wipe the cushion with a wet wipe a few times a week, wash the cushion maybe once a month, and wash the humidifier chamber every few months. I never wash the headgear - it's important to me that the headgear doesn't start wearing out, because once it does, I start having issues with mask leaking because I run higher pressures and have to tighten the straps up a bit.

I wash my mask, hose and humidifier chamber in hot, soapy water(Dawn soap), everyday. I then dry it with a Hurricane dryer.

Hi Personxyz,
I understand your concern...even if it is fueled by OCD.

Years ago, back when I was in college...we did a little experiment in my Micro class testing various means of disinfecting surfaces. We used common soap and water, commercial disinfecting agents, bleach and a few other techniques.

No technique worked better then simple drying. Bacteria and viruses can't live on a clean dry surface. They need moisture.

So you could have two masks and use one for a few days while the other dries completely...then switch. It may ease your anxieties...if nothing else.

It is a deeply-rooted psychological disorder.
They have tried everything--except whatever it is that works.
Drugs, psychotherapy, reason, even electroshock therapy.
It is especially resistant if the sufferer embraces it.
They will always be among us.
We can chose to be tolerant and patient, or amuse ourselves
by abusing them--or selling them snake oil solutions.
