The end justifies the means. I would like to see the end to Big Supplement.

I used Valerian a long time ago just for anxiety, and it did help some.
Recently, though, my sleep doc recommended an OTC product with melatonin (3 mg), glycine, L-Theanine, and Valerian extract. He said that many of his patients had tried it and reported good results. My main problem is I wake up several times a night, every single night. Since I don't know how it will affect me, think I'll save my first try for this weekend. Oh, FWIW, doc said to take two pills, that one probably wouldn't help that much.

My husband and I are both having issues staying asleep and he got some Valerian Root/Melatonin combo pills (they have other stuff too). I call them sh*t pills because they are brown and smell just like it. We both tried. He thinks they help him (I don't see that they do) and I don't find any benefit for me. It's worth a try as your mileage may vary.
yeah, i notice that's what jnk said too, that they stank.
so the vote twixt you and your husband is split, then. good to know!

Supplements are poorly regulated (
http://www.businessinsider.com/suppleme ... lth-2017-8 ). One study found wide discrepancies between the label and what was in the capsule. Even from individual manufacturers, there were big inconsistencies from batch to batch. Cross-contamination is also a problem.
You never know what you are taking.
i'm not really a big supplement kind of guy. i take vitamins and i take glucosamine chondroitin. but even i have read about the trouble with consistency within the industry.
still, as long as i don't get all "hopped up" or end up in pain, i might want to experiment with it.

well, let us know how it goes. i've tried melatonin a very long time ago. all it ever did was put me to sleep, which is fine, but it did nothing to keep me that way.
what's the product you are going to take and what is the dosage?

It's by Schiff and, believe it or not, it's called "Knock-Out"! I had to buy mine online and got it through CVS, but I'm sure it's other places as well. The melatonin dose is 3 mg and Valerian extract is 100 mg. My sleep doc said to take two of them or it wouldn't do any good, but I still might start with one.

Actually at this present moment due to some rather unusual stuff going on....I actually want to get "all hopped up"...
so if you know of anything half way legal...let me know.
I haven't ever tried Valerian root...but I am currently trying a TENS unit to see if it will help with the pain (arthritis) which is causing me some unwanted and too frequent wake ups along with feeling like crap during the day.
The SI joint injections which helped a lot last fall....worn off. Damn. I can only have one more between now and Sept and was trying to put it off until June....and also get over being mad at the bitch in the doctor's office who made me so mad that I said it would be a cold day in hell before I ever went back to that doctor. The doctor is fine...it was his bitch receptionist that I tangled with. Long story there.
I was so hoping to tell them all to go to hell.

Looks like I might have to eat crow and I don't like crow.

Large doses of B-150. Puritan Pride B-150 Twice daily, may take a couple of weeks for full effect. My wifes fingers looked like they went through a ringer washer. Jim

I have used it before, I do feel it helped me stay asleep but ymmv
via supplements or tea? i'd definitely want the supplements as i don't care much for tea.
did you have any side effects?
No side effects and I took the supplements, NOW brand to be specific. I took it for 6-7 weeks and the just started forgetting but was still sleeping better. Maybe I retrained myself or maybe I would have started sleeping better anyways.

oooh, that TENS stuff looks scary, like something out of an old frankenstein movie. be interesting to hear how it works for you.
as to pissing off the help....well, i was kind of thinking about that the other day. at 64, i can no longer play the "angry young man" card.

as much as it pains me, i'm going to have to learn to curb my impatience just a wee bit.

okay, thanks for the info. who knows? maybe a wee switch came on in your head after taking it for so long and it just became normal.

It's not scary and actually quite soothing depending on the setting.
I had used it before for trigger point relief and it was amazing relief.
The arthritis stuff is a bit iffier.
I started with the cheap over the counter Icy Hot unit...not really adjustable in terms of intensity...but it worked well for trigger point relief...amazing in fact.
For the arthritis stuff...the jury is still out but I am seeing some slight improvement. It's going to require continual use though which I am not opposed to. I will know more once this recent cold wet spell goes away....cold and wet always makes me hurt more so it's hard to judge anything.
