Serial and parallel interfaces existed decades before usb was a gleam in some programmer's eye.
A conversion cable would be completely legit--and not so unusual that it would need to be custom built.
At one time, I would surmise they might have been fairly common.

He is that delusional that he thinks he is typing by using a "text to speech" 'app'. (Let that one sink in^^)

I have seen IRC-Chat-Bots who look more 'human' than him (or that).

Some of the problem could be he is running Windows XP. The drivers may not work on that old windows computer he dug out of a dumpster.

my win 98se and my xp were not dug out of dumpsters
No, but those are obsolete operating systems. To expect to not end up with driver issues is foolish.

Probably true. Anything that old would have been melted for scrap long ago. (Windows 98SE, Really???)

xxyzx wrote:THE DOCUMENTATION SAYS IT IS A USB CABLE
Where does it say that? I just read and searched the manufacturer's manual from one end to the other, and they always say "data line" not "USB cable." In one place they call it the "affiliated data line" by which they apparently mean (their English is poor) "the data line that comes with the product."

The manual uses the term "USB" only twice. Once it's part of the term "USB port." The other time it explains the meaning of the USB trident logo. In neither case does it refer to the cable.

Here's the manual if you want to check what I just said.
xxyzx wrote:THEY DO NOT SAY YOU NEED TO USE ANY SPECIAL CONVERSION CABLE
Correct, they don't say that. I agree with you that they should. I agree with you that this is a flaw in the manual. This is a legitimate criticism of Contec.

Product manuals almost always have flaws and room for improvement, and this is definitely something that Contec should improve.

But this flaw in their manual doesn't change the fact (it really is a fact) that the cable they supply has a serial-to-USB bridge chip inside it.

Windows 8 is also an obsolete OS. Replaced by 8.1 the Windows 10. Why not just go back to DOS days, and while you are at it you can continue to reinvent the wheel and solve all the amateurish and incompetent programming that you like to complain about.

THE TRUTH IS IT DOES NOT WORK WITH THEIR CABLE THEIR DEVICE AND THEIR SOFTWARE WITH THEIR INSTRUCTIONS

i have googled and gotten 3 versions of the software and related manuals
they keep making useless changes to an already bizarro interface
Well, the rest of us can figure it out and make it work. The problem must be you and/or incompatibility with your outdated operating systems. Who knows? But you are the only person here griping so much about this stuff so...

the internet is full of complaints about this thing
so are the reviews on many sites

making it work is a game of adventure
that wastes way too much time trying to find their easter eggs and magic words

they should write simple software that is free of bugs
and document it properly
then stop making changes to it

it claims to work on xp 7 8 so it is not my opsys that is at fault

and my gripe was about amazon
when it failed i tried to return it
and amazon said no returns accepted
but that was not shown on the ad page

if you think you can make it work
then write up complete accurate detailed instructions and start selling them
you will get rich
The rest of us have no issues with Amazon either. Perhaps Amazon is wise to you and your antics and has you blacklisted! That wouldn't surprise me in the least bit! The rest of us don't live in your fantasy world and I'm guessing Amazon (and a whole lot of other places) don't consider us loony tunes!!

That is what I do.

In this age of technology, why would anyone try to call?

I bought that exact pulse oximeter about a month ago from Amazon & it works flawlessly.

are you really still arguing about whether or not the the cable is a plain usb-cable or a serial-cable with an build-in converterchip.

RS323 ist still around - quite often actually. mowadays noone has still a (DB9) serial-port. just because it looks like an usb-port on the CMS does not mean that it actually IS an usb-port.

Nah. xxyzx is just pissed off that he bought this thing and it's the second device that he cannot get to connect into his computer systems despite everyone else managing to get it done. Then he's pissed off that the documentation is not up to his standards, but still buys things as cheap as possible not understanding that documentation costs. Then he is pissed off that everyone else sings praises about how far Amazon will go to make customers happy, yet he cannot get along with them well enough to get this item returned. In short, xxyzx is pissed off because the world will not yield to his great intellect and do it his way. Most people would tend to look at their ways of doing things when nothing works for them but works for everyone else, but ya gotta admire xxyzx's self-confidence. The entire world is wrong but never him.

Edit: I forgot to add that xxyzx is most pissed that there are so many people here smarter than him.

I'm going to attempt to move this discussion in a productive direction:

Does anyone know of a better recording pulse oxygen monitor that one can buy?

I'd like to buy one, and I'm okay spending a bit more money to get something that's U.S. made (or at least designed by a U.S. Company).

Not without spending a LOT more money....but you might check into what Nonin offers. I think they say they are US made.

I never expect anything built in the Far East to have documentation written by a native English speaker.
In fact, said documentation is often downright hilarious!

If one oend of the cord plugs into the usb port of a computer, then it is going to be listed as a usb cable. It may not be a STANDARD USB cable, but it is a type of USB cable. The other end can be whatever it needs to be. I have many different USB cables, some standard, some not.
