A quick question: Can anyone tell me why I get e-mail notifications of new private messages, but when I log in there isn't one there?

The best answer I can guess at is that if someone posts a private message and then deletes it before I get a chance to read it, it disappears out of my mailbox. But this happens on a very regular basis. At least every other day, and sometimes two or three times a day, I'll get a notice that there's a new private message.

Yesterday, I had three separate "you have a new private message" e-mails between when I left work (4:30) and when I logged in from home (about 6pm). When I checked, there was but one there.

I'm just curious what I'm missing, or whether I'm receiving spurious "new private messages" messsages.

I think there is a lag between the time your pm is sent, and when the notification is sent... So those notifications are prolly from previous pm's...

I don't think so. This morning, I had two PM notifications in my e-mail box. One for a message that I got last night, and went right in and read the message, the timestamp on the PM and the timestamp on the e-mail were nearly simultaneous. The other for a PM that supposedly came in overnight, but there are no new PMs.

I get enough PM notifications whose date/time stamp are within a few seconds of the date/time stamp of an actual PM in my cpaptalk mailbox that I don't think I'm just getting late notifications. (Although I suppose it's possible I'm getting DUPLICATE notifications).

Just an idea - I'm NOT a computer person, so I don't know if this is possible - but since there is a link on your name, to your site, could you be getting notices when someone links to your site from the board?

Thanks for the thought, but no. I get those, too, and they're quite different in style.

Most likely the answer is that people post messages and then decide against sending them (I know there are a couple of people whom I routinely annoy, and they may choose to write a scathing reply, and then decide that it will serve no purpose and delete them before I get to see them).

It's also possible that I only get SOME of the "private message" notifications, and others get held up in the e-mail stream, and so when I get one of these phantom ones, it's actually old and I just don't realize it.

My concern, and the reason for asking, is just to make sure that there isn't a bug in cpaptalk.com software such that people think they're sending me (and others?) PMs but the recipient is never receiving them.

Better to ask the question and find out the answer is harmless than to not and have a significant percentage of PMs never getting to their intended target.

The reason you are getting those in your email is because on your profile you have it marked to notify you --any post you have looked at, they will send you notification when someone else has a reply after you have looked at the topic. Change your profile to reflect this change.

Nope, that's a different style of notification. I get messages that says "Topic Reply Notification", and different ones that say "Private Message Notification".

I can't speak to Liam's problem, but I have question related to logging on.

When I log on, I have to do it twice (I think). The first time the register button at the top of the page (that changes to "Log out [glassgal]) doesn't change, although my name appears as a registered user. If I retype my name and password, the page refreshes and the "Register" changes as it should have the first time (I think).

Am I doing something wrong? Do other folks have this problem? Is it fixable?

Not a big deal, but mildly annoying.

I just checked the automatically log me on box and I NEVER have to log on. I just load the page.

I have been in and out of the site, shut down internet explorer, tried the auto log on, and nothing seems to change -- could it be some setting that I have on my machine?

Well, for me, I find when I've been away for a while, it doesn't SHOW me as logged in, but since I have "remember me" (or whatever it is) checked off, if I click on the "Private Messages", it then remembers me.

glassgal - you could have some "security" software that has disabled cookies/sessions in your browser.

There's a better browser out there, it's free and it's called firefox. It'll auto-block popups, searching is built right in, and it's secure. It's quickly edging out internet explorer as the dominant web browser with 25 million users. It'll also import all your internet explorer favorites automatically.

I agree. That or Opera. They're both wonderful (for different reasons). You should be able to find either with a simple Google search.

Liam, one browser can't handle all his browsing needs.

I've been using Firefox as my internet browser since back when it was called Firebird. I love Firefox! I use IE to go get my Windows updates and to play cards on the "zone" - otherwise IE just sits, gathering dust.

I have the same problem, and wondered the same thing..... I was going to make a post on it, but didn't think it was really a topic about OSA or apnea or cpap or any of that and you guys would all think of me as nuttier than I am!!

So, now it isn't just the Glassgal.... it is me too! So, whatz up with that?
