Try an Auto

Liam,

I had the Remstar Plus w/C-Flex. I talked my crappy MD into a Remstar Auto w/C-Flex. I have had it for 2 nights, WHAT A DIFFERENCE. SO MUCH EASIER TO BREATH WITH, IT HAS A BRAIN AND KNOWS WHEN TO BACK OFF.

IT WOULD NOT HURT TO GIVE IT A SHOT!!! I REALLY LIKE IT AS DO MANY OTHERS AND I CAN NOW SEE WHY!!

Heidi, who really wants to get her point across, so she uses lots of capital letters and exclaimation points.

Great! I'm glad it's working for you! I still have some things I need to address before I go that route, though, because I've gotten myself into a "fixate on not sleeping" mode lately, such that even when I'm NOT wearing my Captain Cyborg and the Space Dorks equipment, I still find I can't sleep, because I'm fixated on trying to get there.

But I'll definitely keep this in mind, and once I start getting myself back to able to calm down and sleep reasonably, I'll see if I can get them to give me one so I can give it a shot. Thanks!

Liam, who's glad to hear that, he was starting to whimper because he thought he was being yelled at.

Oh, I just realized I forgot one thing in the "What setup are you using?" post. I'll edit it to fix it, but since most people will already have read it:

My pressure is set at 9.

Liam, who's really feeling the pressure.

Liam,

I'm going to add my voice to everyone else's urging you not to give up! One other thought about the depression .... is it worse in the winter? I don't live far from you (is anywhere in NH very far from anywhere else?) and in this neck of the woods winter lack of light is a real bummer. I use "SAD lights" faithfully every morning when I get up and that helps a lot with my winter depressions. I use a light "visor" with a special type of light and wear it for 1/2 hour.

I still don't like the cpap masks and find I do better if I switch off between 2 or 3 different ones... so when I want to throw one across the room I have another one "ready-to-go".

Good luck!
Miindy

Err, ya'll might want to look at the date of Liam's last post. It was in 2005.

He still visits us once in a while, though. He's a great guy and full of wisdom. In fact, I think at one time he had written an ebook and had it available on his website.

Anywho, we still miss ya, Liam and wish you all the best!!!

Kajun

Hey I have to add my two cents in here.

I think that is what is so neat about this site!!!!

People dig through the old posts and actually read them. Okay maybe not the date they were written.

I think it just means we have a very caring community that is passionate about their treatment!!!

Many on here not only "talk the talk" but also "walk the walk".

I am so grateful for the forum members that have hung around for years and keep coming back with their wisdom, insight, knowledge, and support!!! If this was a board of simply "newbies" we could support each other but would probably fall through cracks in our treatment as our DOCTORS sure don't know enough!!!

Occassionally we may not all see eye to eye -- but what "family" always does. The important thing is to what you can use and let the rest go.

Some members come and go, some come for a short while, others a longer time, and still others have been around for quite some time!!! Yet, we all seem to care about each other.

Sorry for the long ramble but wanted to express my sincere THANK YOU TO ALL THE OLD TIMERS!!

"Why thanks!" says Liam, narcissistically searching CPAPTalk to see if he's been mentioned.

No, seriously, I was feeling a little depressed tonight and wondering if anyone here even still remembers me.

Liam, not sure whether to feel good that he is still remembered or ashamed at the level of ego thus revealed in himself.

I just read this entire string and I saw it suggested here several times I believe but I think it bears repeating.

Fixating on the simple breathing is preventing you from falling asleep. I think this is simply a matter of getting used to the thing. I would strongly suggest, as others have already, that you bring your machine to where you would normally watch TV and let it run. Focus on the breathing or not, but don't do this with the intention of sleeping. Take the pressure off yourself on having to go to sleep. The objective is to simply to get used to the mask, the machine, and the breathing.

Also I believe you mentioned the feeling of not getting enough air. I think most here have gone through that feeling as well. I still do once in a while as a matter of fact. Usually when it is time to get up anyway. When I first started, I was using the ramp feature which was preset to start at 4cm. Talk about not getting enough air! I changed that to 8 and still felt the same way. My fixed pressure is now 11 and I feel that even at 10 there is not enough air. i no longer use the ramp. You may want to bump up your pressure 1 or 2 cm and use a cflex setting of 3 to make it easier.

The most important thing to do though, at this stage, is to take the pressure off yourself on having to fall asleep with the thing and just get used to it in front of the tv, computer, book, etc. Then when it is time to go to sleep, you won't be so inclined to think about the breathing. Just a thought for what it is worth.
