I write software for airplanes for a living. We are not allowed to use "self modifying code", which is pretty close to what AI would be. I suppose based on the language used, maybe it would only be data that changed, but the bottom line is that it would be somewhat unpredictable how the machine would behave. Now the machine has physical limits, like it cannot physically create enough pressure to cause real harm. It could, however reduce the pressure below a breathable level, but in that case the masks provide a safety backup vent to prevent harm. To be useful, I think an AI based machine would need access to more information than a basic cpap machine has. If it could know sleeping position, sleep stage including being awake, and who knows what else, it might be able to learn what pressure settings work for different conditions. The advantage is that the machine could set itself up over time in ways that are too complicated and varied for one time sleep studies. I also think that it would not require a separate or expensive update to the processors used in the equipment we have now. There are quite powerful processors that are inexpensive and self contained. We use them to run our cars every day.

that's probably the best near term idea I've heard, it wouldn't take much to run a couple extra wires up a heated hose, and make a connection for an accelerometer module in the mask, and then you'd have sleep position data available, or at least head position, left, right, back...

that's true, but it wouldn't take much to run a couple tiny wires down the short hose either.... it'd take a company that wanted to do it.
accelerometers are so tiny these days, it wouldn't be any extra mass or size... far smaller than a battery to power a wireless module.

but, who knows?

well, Chunky, in all fairness, some people don't realize it's rude to pop into a new spot and start criticizing it, not realizing that it's perfectly fine for different forums to have different atmospheres, giving people an opportunity to find something that fits their personality... even people from the other, "other" forum.

Palerider, some of your newer, un-experienced members are being treated very sarcastically by +16.000 posts members... Something you expect to see in a car mechanics forum, but not in one where potentially very vulnerable/exhausted people come to seek help. huh, well, there's only three people with 16k+ posts, and one of them is the sweetest, least sarcastic person you'd ever want to meet... so I guess you've just got a problem with myself an the frog.

Palerider, I've been a member of other forums, had +20k posts myself, was a moderator, so I know something of how "newbies" can be treated, and what goes on in the minds of the "ancient ones" ... It's just that I find odd that the same things should occur on THIS type of forum. The stakes are different. Again, it's just my opinion and I'm forcing no one to share it.

I like Conti's philosophy on the matter, it's pretty much what our future will look like, however hostile we are towards the concept of intelligent/intuitive machines... Today's CPAP machines are probably utilizing "simple" algorithms (caveat!) which react to how we function/breathe (or don't). A "smart" CPAP utilizing more complex algorithms would be capable of anticipating the events, and apply more finely-tuned actions in consequence. Is that so far-fetched...? I don't think so
