Just change dispisable filters before they "really" need it, or clean the reusable filter before it "needs" to be done.
Some companies suggest you change mask parts more than necessary, but with filters, it is often the other way around.
Maybe they would rather sell machines than filters?

well, having taken apart a few machines that had a few thousand hours on 'em, including one I'd been using for about three years, (and I'm not great about changing filters)... all I can say is that the insides of those, if they've got even the plain filter on 'em, don't pick up much dust at all. except for that light dusting on the foam, the insides looked 'shiny new'.
