If you have a ResMed machine and you take out your SD card to read it using Sleepyhead or ResScan, especially on a Windows 8.1 machine, you can see the dreaded "Invalid SD card erase data? Yes No" message when you put the card back in the machine.

Here's how to fix it without erasing the card.

First of all, what is happening? Windows writes a Folder called System Volume Information onto the card when you put it into your PC. Resmed doesn't like this, and refuses to accept the card.

Take the card out of your Cpap machine, and plug it back into your PC. A Windows Explorer window will open up showing the files on the card. If you don't see the System Volume Information folder it's probably there, but you have your Windows Folder Options set to hide system files.

I think this procedure will work regardless. Hold down the shift key, and right click inside the Explorer window showing your SD card. Click on the option Open Command Window Here.

Now type this command into the black command window:

rmdir "System Volume Information" /s /q

Type it exactly as shown, with the quotes, and with a space before and after the /s and /q commands.

This removes the folder. Pull out the SD card, and try it in your CPAP, now it should work fine.

The next time you remove your SD card from your CPAP, flip the little locking tab on the side, which should in most cases prevent Windows from writing any files to the card.
You can just copy and paste the line, no need to type:
rmdir "System Volume Information" /s /q

The other thing you can do is to put your SD card into another machine and format it. Then unplug the ResMed AirSense machine. Put the blank card into the cpap while it's powerd off. after the card is in the cpap, apply power to the cpap. Now start up the cpap, breathe through your mask for about 2 - mins, and push the power off button on the top of the machind. the data in the ResMed's memory will repopulate the SD card.

I've done this numerous times so I know it works,
Since then, I've acquired a Toshiba Air Flash W-03 SDcard and non longer remove the card... saves me a ton of time and not having to worry about mucking up the card in the CPAP

The only thing is if you let sleepy head point at your sd card, it puts your profile there, so you'll have to recreate the user for sleepyhead

Best of luck with however you do it.

Thanks, Jay. This time it looks like I got away ok... but I have a question about the procedure you outlined. I'm thinking that when you put the SD card back into the computer to look for that system file, you would be putting it in write-protected. Can you still delete the file if the card is write-protected?

No, the procedure would normally go something like this:
(and you don't need to be able to "see" the file to delete it with this method)

You put the card back in the machine, the machine rejects it because you forgot to write protect when you put it in the computer to downloaded to SleepyHead and the computer has put an indexing file on it.

You take the card out of the machine, still not write protected, put it back into the computer, not write protected, follow the procedure above which removes the indexing file, take the card out of the computer, not write protected, and put it back into the machine, not write protected, and the machine is happy.

If you realize after you put the card in the computer that you didn't write protect before doing so, you can just do the above before taking the card out and it will be OK.

Sleepy, it appears that this is not required for the newer ResMed models, the Airsense series which you have.

It did affect some S9 used with Microsoft Windows 8 and newer. Windows 7 did not seem to pose a problem.

It doesn't seem to be a problem for you. I posted here in case somebody else was looking for help with it.

That would work, but I don't see the advantage, why not just let the machine reformat it? It'll still put the summary data back on.

By the way, this whole thing is not really a big deal. If a card has to be reformatted, the detail and high resolution data is lost from the card, but you probably just got through downloading that to SleepyHead or ResScan anyway, so you have it. If not, download before reformatting. The machine retains the last 365 days of Summary Data which will be loaded to the new card. Summary data is all most health professionals look at anyway, sadly.

you got away ok because your machine does not care about added files.

absolutely none of this is necessary.
