Thunderbird for a mail client.... Libire office of word processing and spread sheet...Gimp for graphics and photo correction all of these are available in windows versions .. so you can see if they will work for you.
If these three or four programs do all you need then you can transition to linux and they will all work the same.
As for the look and feel of linux ... there are several desktops that are very similar to windows.
And except for very unusual things most everything can be done in GUI environment.
that's very good advice. depending on what you want to do, linux may be *perfect* light, speedy easier to maintain, less frustrating, less worry prone... or, if you absolutely *have* to use some specific windows only program... impossible.
I haven't been using linux on my notebook for many years, but even in that short time, the improvements in the stability and usability have improved greatly.

I didn't want to get too complicated

The more comprehensive (regarding the basics) the better, since getting the info here is a lot easier than wading thru a swamp of how-to eBooks on Linux.
Now that I take inventory, I do have a lot of windows programs that do my daily heavy lifting. I use uTorrent a lot - what is the equivalent in Linux A certain savvy member that we all know, was encouraging me to get into Usenet for D/Ls - I'm assuming that that would probably be easier with Linux. Vbox sounds interesting. Luckily I'm committed to Firefox. For video and audio editors there's nothing that I'm married to... they all work about the same IMO.

uTorrent ->
transmission (my fave, and bundled with ubuntu), or you can use the linux version of uTorrent. (I just peeked at their web site)
as far as usenet goes, I use
sabnzbd to do the downloading, and have recently started using
nzbhydra to make looking for downloads easier.

I think that it's a very usable platform these days. just a few years ago, not so much...
have I mentioned updates? any programs downloaded and installed by the package manager, as well as the OS itself, are all automatically updated, you can even schedule these things to happen in the background. the vast majority of updates
DO NOT REQUIRE A REBOOT! only when a select few things are updated is a reboot needed.

RandyJ wrote:I hope I am passing along good info... It seems that Microsoft is making Windows 10 a Recommended Update which would download automatically through Windows Update for computers running Windows 7 and newer (if you have Automatic Updates enabled and a certain box checked in your Settings), which could cause some people to install it without realizing. If you have software that is not compatible with Windows 10 (and I'm not sure where Sleepyhead and the other machine reading softwares are with this), it could be a problem if you install Windows 10 too early.

Sleepyhead works great with windows 10 no problems for me. Yes I am one of the ones who got the downloaded automatically had no choice.
After it's all said and done I am OK with it all works great.

I'm an early upgrader to Window 10 and I like it. It looks and acts a lot like Windows 7. In fact, I think everything that was in Windows 7 is in 10, but you might have to look for some things a little. The auto upgrades haven't been a problem for me. They occur in the night. It appears Windows 10 tracks your normal usage and schedules updates for times least likely to interfere. I don't remember having to reboot after one. I've used some of the new "Apps" from the MS store and they're OK. I haven't purchased anything, though. I use Windows Live Mail for my mail client and it synchs multiple accounts including gmail, Outlook (Hotmail), Yahoo and some other POP3 accounts. Outlook(Hotmail), OneDrive, Calendar, as well as the free (basic) online MS Office Apps all work and sync well with Windows 10. The default mail App, Windows 10 mail, works OK, but it is pretty basic.
I've experienced a couple glitches since upgrading, but nothing serious. All my old programs and data survived. And important to this forum, Sleepyhead and ResScan function just as they did with Windows 7.
I know there are some privacy (and conspiracy) issues with Windows 10 and, of course, it's MS's goal to sell something to everyone (but hey, they are in business), but I do think overall security will be improved. Anyway, I saw the following article this morning and it prompted this post:

Based on the name it sounds like MS was especially generous this year and threw everyone that 366th day gratis
